My exhaust manifold is cracked next to the heat stove for the intake manifold by number 4 cylinder....The front half of the exhaust manifold is good...Can I make a "reverse Dutra Dual setup using the Dutra Manifold on cylinders 4, 5, and 6 ??...I would love to retain the factory carburetor heat advantage, because this car will be street driven....I know that I will lose the choke heat well, but I'm using a hand choke style carb....Thanks, Mike S.

Yes... that can be done on RG Slant 6 engines (225 & 198) using 122 tooth ring gear. (904 automatic & most manual shift flywheels)

A Dutra exhaust manifold, machined to fit the rear 3 cylinders, does not work on a 170 (low block) or applications using a high starter 727 "RG" trans.

...Wait.. Dutra Duals don't fit a 170? Dang it. That's what I've got in both cars..

That being said, the slantillac will be the recipient of a "free 225 if you come get it out of our shop..." in Spring, so.. the issue is moot..

But, still.. Dang it.

DD is referring to factory front half of manifold, and DD cast unit on rear three cylinders. I suspect you have the factory chunk on the rear three, in other words opposite of the question posed.

That is correct...
A Dutra casting (3 cylinders grouped together) fits all SL6 applications when that casting is used on the front 3 cylinders.

This changes when the Dutra casting is machined to mount on the rear 3 cylinders... (Dual Dutra Duals) because the manifold goes right over the top of the starter motor.

Take 1 inch off the block deck (170 "low block" SL6) and there is no room. Increase the starter ring gear size (727 trans) and the starter moves higher... and again, no room for the Dutra casting.
This is only an issue when you want to use a Dutra exhaust manifold casting on the rear 3 cylinders.

Don't forget to add a mini starter to the shopping list. The rear pipe barely clears a mini.

Another choice is the robbmc starter, that'll clear anything but its costly.
