Was told I need a torque converter.I can start it up until its warmed up and drive using reverse if needed no problems. When I turn it off say to get gas and then start it again it wont engage into drive . I thought it was the pushbuttons so I cleaned them and sprayed them with silicon . Is this the correct diagnosis (torque converter) ?

I am by no means an expert on tranys but that doesnt sound correct to me.... Maybe someone else will chime in... 1 quest tho, what do you mean by "I can start it up until its warmed up and drive using reverse if needed no problem"? Are you stating that all gears are working or reverse only? (maybe the diagnosis from the other person had stated something that caused you to state that)?

Start it up and let the engine warm up and she goes in any gear, its when I shut it down to get gas or go to store and then start it up again is the problem she dont respond in any gear until I rev the engine up . On bad days I have to go in and out of drive ,neutral ,reverse before anything happens.

(1) Check fluid level
(2) Replace filter
(3) Whilst replacing filter, adjust bands
(4) Report back

Sounds like a worn-out front pump / pump bushing. The extra wear & clearance bleeds-off fluid & pressure.
Cold ATF is thicker and the pump can produce more presser when the fluid is thick... the pressure falls as the ATF heats up.

BTW, if you swapped in a later SL6 onto an early "pushbutton" 904, you need to use a special adapter bushing, between the crank and the torque converter... or the pump bushing in the trans will wear-out quickly.

Thanks Doc when I first got her I went thru the motions of getting it road worthy and the trans was slipping until I added some chemicals and lasted for a year now.I did buy a 70 slant and it came with a manual trans, and took the clutch and bushing to have it machined . He did a good job matching it. Its time to rebuild but over at Fabo theres one and would like to rebuild it so she can still run.Dont like the idea of driving the wifes Honda im spoiled. John

The good news is that the 904 is an extremely easy and simply transmission to rebuild. Shop at:

http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/A904.html

And you can get everything you need for a full rebuild, most likely for under $400 (or even less! I rebuilt three 904s for $300 a few years ago). They even sell torque converters, hard parts, and shift kits.

Frankly, I second Doc's recommendation and suggest you should just pull it and rebuild it. You can remove, rebuild, and reinstall in one weekend if you hustle.
