I had my eye on the rear out of a 69 coronet wagon for quite some time. it was tucked away in a place where i couldnt get to it, and i finally exposed it today. it had become "one" with the ground, and most of the undersides were eaten up. but, it had what i thought would be a 8 3/4 rear in it which would be perfect for my ailing volare. low and behold, when i tumped it over, it was not a 8 3/4 but something else with a inspection cover and 10 bolts holding it on. What is it??? i am not so fimilar with 8 1/4 rears, could i have gotten one? and if so, isnt it out of place in a 1969 model? or, is is a 9 1/4 maybe? I thought that mopars used the 8 3/4 exclusivly in the B body cars. well, if its not any good, i guess its back to the drawing board on finding a rear end for my volare. :!:

Most likely an 8 1/4". No, they did not use 8 3/4" solely in B-Bodies.

Check out: http://www.moparts.com/Tech/Archive/axle/6.html

On another note, Aren't you going to have to do some work to spring perches to put it in a volare? What about length?

I do not know what rear is in your volare, or what you want to replace it, but I have 3, 7-1/4's that all came out of Volare 2 doors. (1 isn't yet pulled out of the parts car, but 2 are. On the B body rear, from what I understand, a B body rear from 66-70 would be the closest match from another car line. Seen any Diplomat squads around?? Miradas, too. are identical to a volare rear in length and spring perch location.

Hmmmm. '69 B-body wagon. Maybe a special ordered Dana 60? What was the car's original engine/trans combo?

it was only a 318 wagon, nothing special, and VERY rusty. it had michigan plates on it, and had been sitting on the ground in southeast texas since 1979. about all i could salvage from it was the rear end and the grille, even the emblems were toast. i dont think its a dana, i know what they look like, and this isnt one. i'll stick with the 8 1/4 idea. i'm going to use it, i am trying to get away from my 7 1/4, before it gets away from me! (it started growling recently) this rear does have the big drums on it, which is a plus. i was sure wanting it to be an 8 3/4 though!

Sorry to hear about your disappointment, V.C. Keep looking....you'll find one someday.

It sounds like your not 100% sure what an 8.75 looks like. It's a front-loader, similar to the Ford 8 & 9" rears. Has no bolt-on cover facing toward the back bumper. That's also the only post-'60 diff they made like that, as far as I know.

i will keep looking. i knew what an 8 3/4 looks like, but am not fimalar with the 8 1/4 rears. i guess i own one now! for my purposes, the 8 1/4 should do fine. my motor is stock, and will be only slightly warmed over when i am done with it.

Oops! You right.....you did say that in your first post.

Well, they say that the memory is the first thing to go when you get older.

I think the 8 1/4 axle was available in '69.

I found an 8 1/4 in an '81 Imperial which has a rear sway bar. Can this axle swap into an A-body?

I saw the forklift driver pick up the Imp, it was a solid and straight black car, the fork lift driver smashed the passenger door and rear quarter. These cars aren't really collectable, but pretty rare. That's what happens when you donate a car to the Kidney foundation, they usually can't sell them, end up in the junk yard like this now smashed Imp.

I know what you mean about hating to see them crushed. i have a friend that runs a scrap iron yard. he told me that the more rare and valuable the car, the more he enjoys crushing it! those in the industry say they start to get a sick satification from crushing rare and unusual cars. go figure?

This was a super straight Imp, the sheet metal of those bodies were thicker than other Detroit cars used. The fork driver rammed it a couple of times as I watched. Like all the other late Imps I've seen the EFI had been replaced with a BBD.

This straight low production numbers Imp is being crushed, they've got a '76 Dart 4-dr /6 904 which has a rough interior and a bent front bumper, they're not parting the Dart out, asking $750. And also asking $1600 for a '61 Falcon 4-dr with a bent door that's trashed inside.

I know the Imp's 8 1/4" axle with work in an A-body, don't know about the factory rear sway bar.

well, i have some good news and some bad news. the good news is, after all that work to get that 8 1/4 and not being totally happy with it, i found a 8 3/4 from a B body at the yard today.

now the bad news. the car i got it from was a 65 coronet 500 2 door that had been crushed! the roof had been pushed in, destroying the whole interior, including door panels, console, seats steering wheel and all the dash components. the floor boards were rusty, so they stacked it up under a pile of other cars... its enough to make you hang your head and cry! i did salvage the grille out of it, but the rest of it was toast. too bad.

That rear doesn't have large nuts holding the drums on, does it?

I had a 69 Satellite that had a 8 1/4 in with slightly warm 360 and never had any trouble with it.Mopar Action just did an article on beefing the 8 1/4 rear and I think more parts are being made for them now such as gears ans better bearings.

I am not sure yet, it has alluminum slot mags bolted on it with caps. and there are 2 locks on each wheel that i have to cut off to get the wheels off! i'll tell you once i get them off. is that one with the nuts on it a bad rear end?
