Folks, I'm new to the forum and still looking through older posts. I am curious if anyone knows of a serpentine belt system that is made for a /6? I suppose it wouldn't be hard to fabricate one but buying it outright would be easier.

March makes a pulley set that uses the new style belts but it uses the same setup as the old V-grove pulley's I know they have one for the V-8's not sure about the slants.

We have a member here who made a serpentine setup for his truck. I believe it was a project for an engineering class. Hopefully Aaron will chime in here and tell you about it. It was a great looking setup when they were done.

This is the only pic I have on this computer of my Serpentine setup, and it doesn't show much. I will post better pics later tonight when I get back to my home computer.

Major tasks that were involved:

Machined a waterpump pulley out of billet aluminum. We tried looking for a pulley off an existing engine, but most existing w/p pulleys are smooth for the back-side of the belt, and use reverse-rotation waterpumps. The way we set it up the w/p is still normal rotation (kind of stuck with it :? ) so a grooved pulley was needed.

Crank pulley is the only 'mystery' pulley we used. It is essentially the same diameter as the original. We pulled it out of a box chock full of misc pulleys at the junkyard. We ended up machining a spacer/adapter out of billet aluminum to mate this pulley to the dampener.

Alternator is off of a '96 Dodge Intrepid.

Power Steering Pump Pulley is off of the same '96 Intrepid (The power steering pumps even appeared to be the same. The Intrepid pulley went on my p/s pump with no mods.

Automatic tensioner is from a mid-90's caravan.

We built a bracket that holds the alt, P/S pump, and automatic tensioner out of 1/4" mild steel....it is a heavy beast. This bracket locates the P/S pump in the factory location, and moves the alternator from the passenger side to the driver's side of the engine. We squeezed the automatic tensioner right in-between the alt and P/S pump.

A little note to reliability: I have roughly 1000 miles on the serpentine system (and engine) currently. I had a spacer we made for the alt 'fail' (buckled--causing slight mis-alignment) and it made the belt jump one groove...virtually destroying that groove on the belt. I replaced the spacer with two nuts on a threaded rod, and have not had any problems since.

Major benefits of the system (to me) are:

1) Alt is out of my way when doing anything with the plugs, wires, dist, or fuel pump.

2) Newer Intrepid alt gives 14.4 volts at 600 rpm idle  :D

3) Power steering pump no longer 'squeals' the belt.

4) I can change the serpentine belt in about 30 seconds with a 3/8", 12" long breaker bar, versus the 30 minutes of swearing , three different size wrenches, and the LONG cheater bar it took to replace my P/S pump belt every year.

I will post better pictures later. Any questions, feel free to ask.

-S/6 aka Aaron

Here are some better pictures of the components:

First is the crank pulley adapter. It was machined with .010" clearance to fit around the dampener and center the adapter. The opposite side has similar clearance for the register hole in the pulley.

An CAD drawing of the adapter is Here.

Second picture is the waterpump pulley. Getting the 'backspacing' of this pulley right was difficult. Even more difficult was machining the v-grooves for the serpentine belt.

An CAD drawing of the pulley is Here.

Third picture is of the main bracket off the truck. It mounts to the original power steering pump mount points, on the driver's front side of the block.

The final picture is a better shot of the installed system.

Ever thought of marketing your system? I would suspect quite a few slanters would be interested - I know I am

This 96 Intrepid- What engine did it come with and is the alterator pulley a press fit or bolt on? The pic looks like bolt on. Did the belt tentioner come off the same car?

Yep, you da man, Super6. I wish I had your fabrication skills!

Alternator pulley is of the bolt-on variety. :) As for teh engine, it has been a while. I remember the engine was a V6, but do not recall the displacement. I think it was a 3.0 Liter V6... :?:

Belt tensioner came off of a mid-90's Dodge Caravan. Basically, it was the first one I found in the junkyard that had a good pulley bearing, the tension spring still worked, and I could actually get at the darn thing with tools. ;)

The actual machine work on the billet aluminum pulleys and adapters was done by my friend, so really he deserves most of the fabrication kudos. I designed and helped build the massive bracket that holds all of the accessories and the tensioner. We were most worried about the relatively small amount of belt wrap on the power steering pulley (about 90° pulley wrap, whereas the original V-belt had approx 180° pulley wrap). But, I have yet to have any belt slippage issues, and have had my slant just a touch over 5000 rpm (peak) several times now.

Hate to dredge up an old topic, but does anyone have the pics that Super6 originally posted? The links no longer work.

I'm glad you did. I wonder if there's a fab person who could crank one out for me. And I'd like to see the pictures, too.

How's about using the wide 3 groove balancer and machining the serpentine grooves directly onto it? Even after the machine work I would imagine it would still have more mass than the stock 1 groove balancer.

I don't think the pics survived. The sad reality is we were notified by his mom that he passed away sometime back. I don't think anyone knows what happened to his truck either....

Shouldn't be too hard to replicate considering that mopar balancers interchange to a certain extent, just need a neutral balance harmoninc balancer from a 1990+ Dakota or Ram, balance and fit it to work.

That would be from a 5.2? Is the 3.9 a neutral motor?

Sorry to hear of his passing!

I wonder if his mom would have any records, or if she's still around and reachable...

What a great idea that was!!
