Hi.
This evening ,in one of my finer moments, I managed to bend almost all of my pushrods.
How ?

Well I put on a complete rocker shaft that i had previously cleaned and prepared . This was after taking .100" off the block. and a new cam/lifters.

The rocker adjuster nuts were almost all the way in.
When I put the rockers on WITHOUT backing off the adjusters all the way ,and spun the engine by hand, I bent them all.
Except the No1 cylinder which I previously backed off to measure cam specs at the valve retainer.
I gave myself an upper cut ,and tomorrow I will remove some straight pushrods from another motor, back off the rocker adjusters and try again.

Brendan.

I did that in 1992, just before a 250 mi roadtrip. Scrambled to find some new ones and drive on. Join the crowd and don't feel too bad.

I'm commiserating with ya.

I took a second cut off the head on my HAMBster a few years back, and she spun fine. Took'er to the strip, and when she warmed up she bent some valves, breaking a timing set in grand fashion. I didn't pick up on it (I thought I'd screwed up on the woodruff key), so replaced the timing set, and promptly shafted another timing set. This time my buddy spotted the bent pushrods (turned out I'd also slightly tipped over a couple valves), and figured it out. We had to cobble things back together to get'er to flame'er & run back onto the trailer. He hammered the pushrods straight again while I diddled yet another timing set in (I straightened the valves at home later).

The kicker is that my buddy did such a good job of straightening the pushrods, using the corner of my trailer as an anvil, right there in the wind and dust at Eagle Field, that I'm still running all of it three years later.

Bending pushrods seems evil till you figger what a cheap safety valve they really are.

There are many things that cost more than a custom set of Smith Bros.......

This is true.

Im more annoyed at myself because I was standing there looking at the rocker shaft on the bench ,and thought to myself , I really should back those adjusters all the way out before i put the thing on.
the reply to self was,"nah should be fine as is(lazy voice in head"!)

bye
Brendan
