Remove the valve cover and remove all the spark plugs. Note the line on the balancer. Install a rubber hose into the #1 spark plug hole, like the one in a CLT kit or compression test kit. Then turn the crankshaft slowly until you feel air against your thumb, watching the valves can help you determine which stroke the engine is on. Stop turning when the line in the balancer lines up with 0 on the timing tab.

Go ahead and save that weird car, the sedan, the 6 cylinder, the C-Body. If you want a big block musclecar and that's all you care about, your missing the point.

As above but you can also keep this in mind:

If you have an old or original balancer it may have slipped so if the hose test or if you use a finger in plug hole to check pressure you may need to remark the #1 position on the damper to be accurate.

For the proper position if you have lined up the damper and timing tab line with the piston at TDC, the rocker arms for #1 should be a little loose (wiggle them with your hand...if they are both tight you need to go back around 1 more time- hopefully it's not because the valve lash is too tight).

Another good aid is to use an old distributor cap that you drill a hole between the center and the #1 tower so when you install the distributor you can see if the rotor is lining up to the #1 tower before tightening down the hold down bolt.

Good Luck.
