so i am chewing on a MS3X system and im stuck on pickups... i can go crank trigger or use factory dizzy. but what about using a lean burn dual pickup dizzy to control two functions?

one pickup for normal spark until i use the MS3 and then the other for an RPM pickup for the EFI?

now i dont like using the dizzy for the obvious reason of variance, but is there an easier way to go? am i being to picky?

Just FYI, I checked a lean burn dual pickup dizzy from a 1985+ slant six truck on my machine and the pickups are staggered 10 degrees apart from each other...so if you index the normal position pickup on the passenger fender side of the dizzy like the EI dizzy's, and switch to the lead on the blokc side of the dizzy you get 10 degrees of advance...

So before you go this route, make sure that this phasing/index change won't goof up our timing table too much.

Crank trigger would be better since the gear can't go bad on you.

thats a good point... i was hoping it would be one "tooth" over on the pickup wheel. any advice for a pickup wheel? running a romac with no extra pulleys or interference.

I would see what everyone else is currently running, but the setup I've been poking at was the MSD Flying Magnet setup P/N-8555, but that's what was recommended for the setup I've been sorting together.

i think you typed the PN wrong as that doesn't come up anywhere... even on summit. how many magnets is it?

It's a universal for up to V-10/12...just install the magnets you need (and drill the holes to match your damper. Part number is 8655, it's also $300..(I bought mine a long while back when it only 1/2 that with summit discount.

I would only use one pickup. The Lean Burn won't work well without some sort of electronic controls; what were you planning to use pre-MS3?

Back to this line:

"one pickup for normal spark until i use the MS3 and then the other for an RPM pickup for the EFI? "

What would the normal spark be?

I see where Matt is going with this and I already refurbished a single pickup ESC distributor for another board member fo this kind of scenario. Not sure how you could use the stock EI system with a distributor that provides static timing (I.E. no advance...the spark computer on these vehicles provides the advance through a crude system of electronics and vacuum signal, if installed it will just provide timing as set---i.e. set it at TDC it will be TDC no matter what...)

So if you install it, you still need some kind of ignition setup that will provide the required advance to get best timing at all driving rpms (computer,MS,etc).

On late mopar ESC the first pickup is the start pickup to give little or no advance while cranking, then once things were underway and the ESC was satisfied it would then take signals from the other pickup getting that extra "initial" timing + what the ESC was handing out.

hmm i see now. would it be that hard to move one pickup to 30adv and the other set at 0*? just thinking out loud.

If you've opened up a mopar IE you know that the pickup and 'magnet sandwich' attached to it take up a fair amount of room. You might get close, but I wouldn't want the pickup next to the magnet on the other pick up and get a false signal or crosstalk and you have some interesting ignition issues (no pa look, I got a multispark distributor!)...

If I had more time I have a couple of these laying around I could make one for fun and see how it does on the machine. If you had a few laying around to take apart on the cheap, you might give it a try and see if it works out.
