With all the talk recently about unusual buildups, it's gotten me to wonder which would be cheaper: To take a set of forged pistons intended for imports and stick them on custom made rods, or to go with stock (probably 198?) rods and use custom forged pistons? How much does a set of custom forged pistons typically run?

Racers I've talked to have said that it's around $600 for a set of custom forged pistons. This is cheaper than custom/semi-custom rod options.

My information is second hand, and Ive seen nothing on this webring to back it up, but according to my builder, marine spec pistons for the 225 are forged right off the shelf. Don't know if it'll have the deck height you want, but mine are on order, and when they come in I'll let you know how nice they are.

What are the cost on these "marine" pistons.

Thanks,
Rick

According to my builder, they are identical in dimensions and are about twice the price of standard. I still haven't seen them but he assures me they are available. I seem to remember an article on allpar or valiant.org mentioning the presence of an extra oil control ring on the commercial heavy duty slant and I'm hoping the marine has one as well. Compression is the same.

Sounds like a great lead! I would definately be interested in a set if they are indeed forged. Could you keep us posted when you get them and perhaps a final price and phone number to order from?

Thanks,
Rick Covalt

Rick, I absolutely will you can count on it.

I'm still looking for info on the marine/industrial slants on my board, if anyone reads this that knows a lot about these motors please go post your tidbits on that board, should make it interesting. Thanks!

Custom forged pistons will be $60-$100 a pop. Custom rods will be $80-$200 a pop. It pays to shop around.

We have 2 Yale lift trucks in the shop now that have industrial Slants in them. I'd pull a piston and look, but neither one is in for engine work.

Guys, as promised I am updating you all on the forged pistons.

They cross over to a Federal Mogul forged piston, $60 CDN each, dimensions identical to stock, still no word on whether there's an extra oil control ring but it's a stock item, Sold under a divisional brand name, can't remember which. Nice low priced slug.
