I've been trying to get less heat to the intake manifold, as I run propane, and can't afford a pair of dutra duals.

First, it was full heat, then I replaced the steel gasket with a sheet of thin steel. To be honest, I couldn't tell any different. The intake manifold would still be so hot the carb would burn your fingers to touch it.

So the last time I had the manifolds off, I asked the the parts house if they had any high temperature gasket material, the metallic "reflector" kind. It's about 1/8 in thick, with a shiny metal side. I made it about 1.5 in wider on both sides and about an inch front and back than the opening between the exhaust and intake. To be honest, it still gets hot... but even with the bolts conducting heat, the intake's a lot cooler than before. It'll still get hot, but now you can put your hand on the carb and not burn yourself!

Now you know why I run a heat deflector under the carb....it makes a big difference. A nice sandwich between the two manifolds helps a lot too! I have used a combination of sheet stock aluminum and the Remflex gasket as a sandwich. Even with out running propane the carb can still can get too hot!

I have one manifold setup with out the stock exhaust divert/heat riser. I removed it, but run an aluminum intake manifold so it still warms up super fast for good mileage.

So Ted, do you mean you have a stock exhaust manifold with the flapper cut out?

Yes! I have one set up that way and it is ground out to a full 2.25" inside. That is my favorite set up, even in winter as long as I run the aluminum intake with it and heat deflector to help warm up the intake.

On my first attempt at a homemade MPFI setup I had a modded super 6 (aluminum) intake & exhaust manifold -I had a fixed deflector to replace the heat riser valve. The engine pinged often & the "high temp" paint on the intake turned black & started to peel off!

Yes, it was blistering hot up here yesterday, 92 degrees. The straight blade fans ended up running almost all the way home! I checked the wiring temperature and they were not even warm....Need to check out some more efficient curved blade type fans that will pump a little more air. The straight blade fans were only temporary but, I have been running them 3 years now.

The good part is the carb stayed luke warm and hot starts after shopping were immediate. So any kind of deflector you can make will help in a big way!
