Hey everyone, friend of mine is thinking of building a high comp 225, here is the plan:

'65 Block
'73 Head Port and Polished
Engine builder Valves
Has not decided on a cam, but wants to be street-able
Super six intake manifold with 500 cfm holley
Wiseco High comp pistons
198 rods
'65 forged crank
Exhaust manifold to 3" straight pipe.

Couple questions, what cam should be used?
Also what rear end gearing is should this run?
It's being built for highway pulls, so like 40 mph to 140 mph (I know, illegal, stupid, etc...).

Just asking, but why go to the trouble of building a high compression motor and then choke it with crap intake and exhaust manifolds?

He's a student as well as me, so were both building stuff that we could build onto. The exhaust manifold will be ported/polished as well, not that it makes a difference.

Much like D said, half of this can go bye, and save 50% of your budget...being a student that should take priority over "the dream build"...

You want a nice responsive street build in a 3200 lb car:

1973 head w/Engine Builder valves, clean up the ports, don't go overboard on porting.
1965 block, magnaflux and over bore to .030 minimum...(using stock pistons will save major bux on pistons...)
Should use a 1973 crank and annular spacer...I just took a 1963 and a 1967 crank to the scrap yard, they weighed 190 lbs combined, I have a 1974 and 1976 crank and they are a little lighter(not as light as a cast crank of any year).
Resize and condition stock rods (that will save major bux over the 198 rods)
Plane block about .110 to get a .065 deck (typical mid-60's blocks are about .175 in the hole...measure for correct application).
Cut cylinder head for about a 52 cc combustion chamber (about a .013 cut if stock at 54cc 1973 head...less if new seats and bigger valves).
New Harmonic Balancer.
Double Roller Timing setup.
OCG 346 set to 109 LSA, degree to 103 intake lobe centerline
(alternate Erson 280/270 109LSA grind +4 and centerline to 105)
Use an offy intake and whatever carb is handy...(500 cfm Carter optimum to start).
Stock exhaust manifold, 2.25" ID pipe to muffler and out the muffler.
recurve distributor, use a 3.23 rear gear if automatic (would work best with an OD transmission and a 3.73-3.91 gear).

Should net about a 10:1 SCR and an 8.18:1 +/- DCR....(if OCG used)=pump gas if recurve is correct.

Upgrade to dutra duals or headers and true dual exhaust when more money available.

If I were to use the local bread and butter shop and do my own assembly...above engine from scratch is about $1500-American...including rebuild kit, valves/springs/retainers, does not include intake or carb....you can shave a few more $$$ off if you take lots of time trolling for cut rate parts at rockauto.

If really on a student budget and stuck with a super six, 9:1 SCR, a 252 advertised duration cam, and a bigger exhaust with 350 cfm Holley and stock valves would work just great on the street.

OK, I can understand the build into it thing. :D

FYI, keep a close eye on the Parts for Sale section, intakes and headers come up for sale all the time.

How much power would that bring around? Any idea?

Headers and intake will make a big difference, but you will fall way short of your 140 mph goal.

I was figuring that haha. So with the setup that D.Idiot gave me, any ideas on 1/4 times? 2900 lb car without driver. That would be including offenhauser manifold and 4 barrel carb. Friend and I are trying to push the slant six scene up here now

Headers and Clifford intake will improve that greatly...with the single pipe and small carb...it will most likely bat in the 190hp at the crank range...16 sec 1/4 mile frame...

That shouldn't have a problem going 140 mph if you have enough straight road to do it (I know I ran out of road but not power and acceleration with a lot less engine build). The problem at that speed is brakes and suspension/steering...most classic mopars are bricks and not as aerodynamic (Too bad they don't offer a Superbird kit for the 64-66 or 67-69 Barracuda or 1970-1976 Duster....)

and I would love nitrous, but up here if a cop sees a bottle once, you're getting pulled everytime you go for a drive for the rest of your life.
