Hello! And cheers!
I have a few questions that my research hasn't answered, so I'm hope'n someone here can help. Thanks.

My car is a 65 valiant 100. 2.8\3speed

I have a late 70's early 80s sun super tach II, its on 6 setting, and wired in properly, doesn't read right though, and I can't seem to figure out why, the only thing I can figure is that it has something to do with my pertronix or flame thrower coil?? The needle bounces around sometimes, and reads low.

I also want too put a 3 speed floor shifter in my car. I'm not sure what shifter is best, and what brackets and rods and mounting plates I'm gonna need. Any help with this would be rad! Part numbers, part names, ideas and opinions etc ...

I also have a supersix 2bbrl alum intake, and 2bbrl carb. The single bbrl carb use's a throttle rod, can't use this set up on the 2bbrl, carb mounts diff. I've been told to go to a v8 pedal assembly that's cable actuated ... do any of you know if that is all I need? And will it work?

Thanks you all, so much! Cheers!

sounds like your tach is on its way out or you have a loose connection somewhere. the floor shift isnt gonna happen with the non syncro first three speed, there was only one company that i could find that made them for a short while back in the 70's. it was syrco or something like that iirc. i know it sucks, im going through the same thing with my car. when i converted from my 1bbl to the two i had to get rid of the linkage setup and i used the v8 style pedal and cable setup. worked pretty good. i had to drill a couple holes in the firewall for mounting and had to shim the bottom of the bracket to get the pedal to sit off of the floor. other than that it was pretty straight forward and has been working for a decade now.

Primary choice would be a 70's A-230 3 speed since it has the synchro 1st gear. Technically speaking since you are going to go through the same trouble to install that tranny with all the clutch and floor hump change over, you may as well just install a 4 speed as the other plug and play option, A-833OD's are still available if you take the time to hunt one down...this also gives you a golden opportunity later with the OD drive to change the rear ratio to something more "fun" and keep the mileage.

I get the impression the OP already has the 3 speed trans in the car, and just needs a floor shifter, for it.
I had a 65 Valiant, back in the 70's that had a Hurst shifter. I don't know if it is still available.

What I did to get the pedal off the floor was a piece of box tubing. I drilled a large enough hole for the cable to come through and then two for the pedal mounting. Finally I drilled three to mount to the existing rod linkage mounting point. I checked the other day and it all fits well and the firewall uses standard thread small body bolts. I don't know what the thread is on them but I have a box and have used them ALL over the place.

Universal three speed floor shifters are available. Just do a google search for them. Since they are "universal" there will be some assembly required to make them work.

Per Kesteb there are plenty to chose from. One thing to note, floor shift cars came with tailshaft housings that had bosses cast into it for mount the shifter to the tranny. In column shift cars most came without these bosses, so you may end up with either mounting the shifter to the floor or getting a collar or pad to mount to the tranny for the shifter. I only worry about the floor mounted shifter in the manual tranny in case the motor and tranny mounts are loose or spongy a burst of torque or bump in the road can move the drivetrain assembly compared to the body and shift it out of gear unwillingly.

I guess I'm more used to requests to deep six the automatic for the shift stick and clutch, but that would make more sense. Although in a broader sense of the term, some of our local mechanics have referred to the A-904/A-727 as a "three speed" and differentiate between the 3 speeds as automatic or standard.

Yea the cars a 3speed manualtrans ... Id love to have a four speed, but they seem to be expensive. I wanted to change to a floor shift, may just rebuild the 3tree linkage. A lot of old wrenches I've talk too seem to say converting to the floor always = sloppy linkage.

Id be bummed if my tachs dead, guess id have to buy a new one and see if it works ok? Yes the tach wire is connected to the (-) side of the coil.

I got a 65 v8 cable actuated throttle pedal assembly ... hope it works.

I hear someone on this site sells custom cams? are there any good heads for this engine?

That's because they get hammered on and don't get rebuilt or adjusted, then dumped in front of the mechanic to fix or sold as a "basket case". I've had no problems rebuilding the hurst 4 speed shifters, and the inland 3 speed floor shifters found in the 70's cars has never been a sloppy mechanism even after 40 years. Oddly I have yet to see a 3 on the tree be crisp and accurate, and you'll have to get creative on the bushings for the column shift rods.

Custom Cams you can contact Oregon Cam Grinding or your local cam regrinder. For he head see:
