So I have a 1/2 ton truck with sl6, manual 2 wheel drive single barrel carb, leaks oil a bit. Not very quick and at 80+ mph the running gear is humming along. Even with that momentum hills I struggle for 60mph. Been reading a bit on here. Gonna check vacume advance. Recurving the distributor sounds cool too.this engine came out of 76 Voltair only switched carb and messed with timing. Got another sl6 red industrial sitting.
I've never rebuilt an engine my grandpa has (318,360, bmw) a couple and will help me, least a lil. Trying to find out what I can do to keep duribility, improve hp by least 50, maybe a lil stronger at low end torque. I think with some more power I can change my gear ratio so I don't blow my engine on freeway. Keeping gas milage at or above 20 mpg would be nice.
So I've learned should change or alter cam to around .35 to .45. Shave head up to .90 until I disassemble engine not sure condition of cylinders but I'm not trying to overbore unless needed or recomended. Also camfer all oil/ water access holes. I need a list of what if anything I can improve in bottom end. I don't go over 5000rpms much if at all but nice to if needed. And what parts for the head should I upgrade and order, before I take all to machine shop.? Intake and exhaust stock. Like the quiet but considering an el"e-cut" so I'll have both. Could look at intake torn between carb and direct port in. Like simplicity and dependable but better mpg and performance makes me like fuel injection. So a few questions and some ideas. Thanks tons.
