Has there ever been a consensus reached about a clutch fan that is a direct bolt-in on an A-body that clears the radiator? I am looking to replace the fixed seven blade fan on my brother's 74 Duster that has AC and the heavy duty cooling package.

Something about a Mercedes clutch fan working. I remember doing a search and that is what I came up with.

Yes, the 78 Mercedes 280 fan, but those are over $70 used. I am hoping for something a bit cheaper.

Interesting. Hayden 1707, Rockauto has it for $20 with shipping on closeout, supposed to fit a 74 Valiant with a slant. I might get one and try it.

EDIT: I ordered one. It should get here this week or next. I will see if it will clear on my brother's 74 Duster and report back.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

If it almost fits, you could get a radiator out of an F body. I did that when I added an electrc fan to my 70 dart years ago. They are pretty thin.

i'll get you some part numbers. i do know the fan is a Flex-a-lite 17" standard rotation fan #5717. i had a 7 blade 20" BB alumnium fan but it hit the snout of the P/S pump. Its A Hayden #2765 standard duty clutch, full lock up at 200* @ 70% engine speed.

Dang, that is a close fit, but I guess it is supposed to be. I have a line on a Toyota fan that should fit. I might give it a try and see if it works.

Reed,

I bought the one that Summit lists in the MOPAR section of their catalog and ran it for 3 years on my 74 Dart. After that, I went with electric fans to get better gas mileage.

I sold one of those fans to "emsvitil" about a year ago. Send him a pm and see if he ended up using it. Heres the original post:

Thanks for the input and offers. The fan I ordered from Rockauto hasn't arrived yet and I won't be getting the Toyota fan until next week. I have some serious doubt about the Hayden unit but the Toyota looks like a more affordable version of the Mercedes fan. I will keep you posted.
