If it's an original 65 transmission you need the filter with 2 holes. I believe it's got something to do with the rear pump.

In ‘66 the factory deleted the rear fluid pump on all Torqueflite transmissions per Dan Stern on Allpar. The two pump units require a filter that has two pick-up holes to feed both pumps. You need to drop the pan, or cross match part/casting number to determine if your transmission has two pumps.

I think the 1965 transmission is a one year only unit having something to do with push button control and lack of trunion that acts as a U Joint. Others will chime in on this with more detail. All bets are off if some other year transmission has been retro fitted to your car, requiring examination of valve body to tell if it requires a two hole filter or not.

Fitting a single hole filter to a two pump unit will starve the rear pump causing a non shift condition, and burnt clutches.

LOL thanks for the help. i do appreciate the responses.

If the trans is a cable shifted trans (either pushbutton or floor shift or coluum), and have a flange the driveshaft bolts, it will have a rear pump, and need the 2 hole filter

I am not positive, but I don't think the incorrect (single hole) filter would prevent reverse from engaging. The rear pump only operates when the vehicle is in motion. I would drop the pan and check the strut for the rear band, to see if it didn't fall out, and adjust the band. Actually, before doing that, make sure the shift cable is adjusted properly. It can be a little tricky.

Drop the pan. It will make everything easier. Check for correct (2 hole) filter, adjust bands, check and adjust cables and connections where you can see them! Swap to a New style 904 pan with a drainplug will make your life easier in the future.(and you get to add even more fluid  )

You are better off sticking with WIX Filters.

i got it from o reilly auto parts, and didn't think to ask for wix, i know fram is considered inadequate now days. i will get wix and pull pan when it warms up some. weather looks like will be nasty for a while as upper lever low is movin in. those words mean prolonged slow movin wet!! whether spring or winter! at least Missouri isn't north dakota or up in notheast!!!!!!LOL
i live out in the country and its a shame labor to work on anything automotive is so high even out here... much less what a dealership charges!! i'm gonna look and price gettin the tranny rebuilt if that is what it will come to. i know what the complete rebuild kit costs retail , will just have to find competent guy that knows these old ones that i can afford. i just can't handle trying to pull it on dirt floor with 35 yr old floor jack and woreout knees and shoulder joints. hopefuly its just the wri=ong filter.LOL hey ya should have seen me and old woman changing out the motor and tranny with chain hoist hooked to rafter!!??? LOL

i pulled pan this afternoon, i do have correct 2 hole filter, the shift cable moves thru all gears. i have fsm, i read about adjusting the rear band. ( please bear with me the manual doesn't seem to give me the name for these parts and i'm tranny ignorant!)
here's the thing, i back off nut at that big lever 5 turns and if i tighten screw it will be almost all the way in. what i want to know is : should that big lever be all the way up and then adjust screw or what. when i first pulled pan and looked in there the band was not snug and the big lever was down i beleive, and not up against the servo ( i guess thats what it goes against.
for now, pan is off, i would like to adjust and button up tomorrow before the cold and snow hits again, yes i know, i'm lucky i'm not farther north or east!!!!! but the wind and snow blows in that shed anyway!! LOL

You got it wrong, loosen the nut then run the screw in till it is firm not real tight. This is where you loosen screw the number of turns the FSM recomends Then while holding the screw with some sort of wrench tighten the nut
This is over simplified but it will work.
