Just curious, reading back thru old posts there was a post made by slant six Dan that stated...........As others have mentioned, the Holley 2280 was an aftermarket carb that was offered (by Holley) for Chrysler 2bbl applications including the 225 and the 318. It was never factory installed. ..........This post was made in 2005 and the topic was concerning a fellow members super six set-up.

Since then maybe there was a correction made, I am under the impression from another authoritative source ( Reed ) that ..............The factory offered two different carburetors in the Super Six package, each with their own quirks. The most common carburetor is the Carter BBD. This is a two barrel carburetor which flows about 280 CFM. The other carburetor was the Holley 2280..................

I have yet to see a Holley on one of these intakes but I am new to this so again just curious why Dan would have said this. Thanks

Another question, I picked up a spare set-up yesterday locally and am wondering why this intake does not have the cut-out for the sensor that my other cast iron super six intake has ( down on the floor below )

Thanks

One more, this spare set-up evidently sat partially in water, the intake and exhaust have some major pitting at the head mating surfaces. I am guessing that this needs to be re-surfaced otherwise I may have a problem with leaks.

I am going to guess that regardless of whether I use this exhaust manifold or another ( it will prob be another ) that I should have them re-surfaced together as a unit?

Am I on the right track? What would be the correct procedure for getting these lined up prior to sending them to the machine shop, would it be......

A- bolt them onto my head first at the head end and then tighten the outer studs/bolt/nuts at the carb end

B- Send them off separately and let them re-surface and assume that I wont have any issues when bolting all this back together on the block?

C- It makes no difference how I do it

The intake manifold with sensor mount is intended for use with the LeanBurn setup, which came after the SuperSix was discontinued.

According to the factory manuals '77-'78-'79, the Holley 2280 was only fitted to the 318 V8 engines. I don't have the manual for 1980, but I don't think the Holley was ever fitted to the SuperSix engines.

For the difference between a BBD intended for 225 og 318 engines, read from page 26 in this manual: http://u225.torque.net/cars/SL6/docs/BBD_Manuals.pdf, and view the movie: http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Lit/Films/348/

As for manifold resurfacing, I would go for B, but I think there are forum members who have had this job done several times, and I hope they can provide some insight on the matter. You may also search the forum for info.

I was thinking more along original equipment, two sources have different opinions and I am curious on the real scoop. Nice looking engine bay though. Good detail work

Most factory Super Six packages had the BBD. By the early 80s the 2280 was a factory installed carburetor on the 318 (I once had an 83 Dodge van with a 318 and the Holley 2280 was the original factory carb). Holley also offered the 2280 as an aftermarket bolt on replacement for the Super Six. The Super Six was last available in 81 or 80 (I can't real which) and it would only have been the very last Super Sixes that would ave had the 2280 installed. So, the answer to your question about the carb is a bit complex- the 2280 was a factory Chrysler carb, but usually for the 318. The 2280 was also an aftermarket carb designed for use on the Super Six. I don't really see much of a difference between running either carb unless you absolutely have to have something factory original. I have had great success with both carbs. I may have been wrong when I said that the factory offered the 2280 on the Super Six intake. However, I do believe it was installed by dealers as a replacement for the BBD. The last 2280 I purchased was a NOS unit that came from a municipal warehouse that had purchased a pallet of them to service the fleet vehicles back in the 80s. Mine is a Super Six correct carb.

I would pick the intake and exhaust manifolds that you want to use, bolt them together loosely, install them on the head using the factory correct procedure, then remove them as a unit (without loosening the there bolts holding them together) and send the unit off to have the mounting face resurfaced.

Thats what I was waiting for, thanks Reed, very interesting to hear about the carbs. No I have no preference, I have a couple now of the BBD and reading your Super Six article makes me feel that its a good carb and I will be happy with it.

I enjoy the nitty gritty facts of things so that is why I had asked.

Thanks also on the advice of the machining. Ultimately I will leave it up to the machinest, the one that I should have been working with all along and let them decide how they want it done but Id like to hear others experiences.

This article was pointed out to me from someone on the A-bodies forum Olaf, maybe you will find it helpful, looks like they get into re-grinding the manifolds. Have not read it yet.
