Just finished getting this /6 installed in my truck. Now it smokes like a skeeter fogger.
It never seems to stop smoking. After driving for a little while it lightens up, but if you let it idle for any length of time it is bad, then it really blows when you take off. Running a steady speed it seems to be fine.
Now I am stumped with what to do. Valve seals? Guides? Oil ring?
It seems pretty consistent with smoke, all the plugs are coated and the compression is within 5psi in all cyl. Truck has plenty of power.
I wonder if those seal dried out in the 4 years that motor sat on the stand?
Well I guess I will start with the valve cover, pull it off and see what those seals look like.
Yes the motor was used, and I saw it run with no smoke before I got it. The head was just worked a few thousand miles before it was installed in the previous truck. I know the owner well.
Then today as I was backing out the driveway, the engine started dumping oil everywhere. Looking under the truck I see what looks to be a fitting missing a cap. It is in a tube of some sort that is coming out of the oil pump. Where the sending unit normally goes. I guess this cap blew off or wasn't secured when I had a aftermarket oil gauge installed a few weeks ago. Thinking I should just unscrew that tube and put a pipe plug in there.
Well I feel better, sometimes you just have to vent!

Great looking truck, valve seals come to mind first as well.

agree, great looking truck

I thought that if the motor smoked only on start up,, then it cleared away that was in indication of bad valve seals..
if it is smoking all the time, idle and in use then it is piston ring sealing issue.

while the engine was sitting, is it possible moisture got to the cylinder walls? Or maybe the rings stuck from sitting? I would be inclined to keep some high detergent oil in it and run a couple tanks of gas through it. May clear up.
While doing that..
what are the actual cylinder compression values? 100 or 150?
after doing a compression check,, add a bit of oil to the cylinder, about a table spoon of 10w30,,if the compression values increase, that is a sign that rings are not sealing...

In the first picture it looks like you are smoking, not the truck!

I'm with DadTruck, check compression and run something like Rotella for a couple of tanks.

Great looking Power Wagon!

When the valve seals in my engine were bad, it would smoke worse on startup, but would still smoke to a lesser extent when hot. It's easy to check, at least.

Good suggestion on the wet compression test, too. That would at least give you some peace of mind if the rings aren't the problem.
