Went to the track today. Mason Dixon was full today and I only got in 2 T&T runs. Both were nearly identical. 15.46 @ 85.8 and 15.48 @ 86.0 with 2.16 60 fts. I was shifting at 5200 so there is probably a tenth or two left in it, but I see no reason to run it to 5800-6000.

I did have a flutter probably around 4000-4500 and then it smooths out and pulls normally on up to my shift point. Any ideas?

I run my car in and out of my garage dozens of times between races, and I was thinking maybe the plugs are a bit fouled? I have had this same thing happen before and it usually only happens on my first run. Then it would be fine after that. Today it did it on both runs. I had a new set of plugs, but forgot and left them at home.

Good news! It made it down the track and drove itself back onto the trailer. All and all a good day. May 17th here we come.

Me and the Valiant had a good weekend at the track. By that I mean, it drove back on the trailer under it's own power, and I did not red-light all weekend.

Motor in the Valiant ran well all weekend and I did not tune on it at all . I have been fighting a tiny anti freeze drip after it warms up and it turned out to be the by-pass hose seeping. Tightened that up and all was well.

Car started out at 15.5"s and kept getting faster throughout the weekend. I think my best was a 15.11 @ 87. This is a standard bore 225 that I re-ringed and put in a Howards .473 lift cam and my head with engine builder valves. I think it would easily run a 14.8-9 but I want to keep this engine all in one piece for a while. Self imposed RPM limit of 5200 was adhered to all weekend.

Exactly why I never pushed my car past mid 13's. I'm lazy and didn't want to pull and go thru the engine again :D

Just a little update on the car after racing at Farmington / Wilkesboro this past weekend. The car ran really well except for having a little bit of a flutter when the 4 barrel tipped in. It wasn't bad at first but in the 2nd rd Friday against Lukas Bruner in the Funny truck it was terrrible. It dropped from a 9.85 1/8 mile to a 10.4 1/8. And you can't win races like that. I made 8 passes, with only 2 red lights in practice, and they were -.004 & -.006 so that isn't too bad.
We went to Wilkesboro to the dealership for the car show, and I talked to some people about what to try. I decided that I would just unhook the link to the 4 barrel and just run off the 2 barrel. If that did not work it was suggested that I try removing the drop base air cleaner and try that. So off to race track we go. I made the first run and the car ran silky smooth and flawless. Car ran a 9.95 and my best the night before on the 4 barrel was a 9.83. I made 8 runs and the car kept getting faster throughout the evening. So much so that when I made my final run against Charlie Schmid that I broke out with a 9.79 on a 9.81! I actually ran faster on the 2 barrel than I did on the 4 barrel the night before.
I can watch the A/F gauge go instant lean when the 4 barrel opens so I am going to go up a size or two on the secondary jets and see what it does. I didn't want to pull the top off the carb at the track to work on it if I didn't have to.

Well, I think I have my high RPM flutter solved. After pulling the top off the Edelbrock carb I found secondary jets that were .101's and that is two steps rich. So I went back to the .095's and figured all would be well. Not so fast! I had the same flutter as before. So I did what Gary Bruner said and removed the air cleaner. I took it out the road and it ran flawlessly! I really don't know why, but I will take it. It is an Edelbrock air cleaner with a 3" tall filter, and it has a drop base. I suppose the drop base disrupts the flow or something at certain RPM's. I don't know.
Gary told me that he had seen this before and I guess he was right.

Well! No so fast. I warmed the car up and ran it down the road today and the flutter was back! :x I did nothing since last week except park it in the garage. I ran it a little farther down the road today but the flutter is definitely still there. I still think it is carb related so I will put on the new Edelbrock I have on the shelf and see if it goes away.

Wow! I knew that was too simple!!

I have been having that same problem with my 500 avs. I tried just about everything. The only thing that I can point at is float adjustment. I have found that they don't stay adjusted. Now race prep is to check them. I have also decreased the fuel pressure down to 5psi.

Over the last 2 weeks I have had the top off the carb at least 6 times to change the size jets in the secondaries (and the primaries). I went up from a .095 to .098 to .101 to .104 in the secondaries. All with no real improvement in the flutter. The last change made it even worse. So I pulled it back in the garage and removed the carb and bolted on a "brand new" (as in not a re-manufactured carb). I did not change one single thing from the stock settings it came with. I took it up the road and made 3 WOT passes and all were perfectly, silky smooth! AFR with this carb out of the box was 12.5-12.7 so I ain't tuchin nuttin!!
I'd really like to know what the deal is with the other carb but I am pretty sure it is somthing to do with the secondary passages. With that carb on the AFR at WOT was not steady as you would think. It kind of bounced around. It was a re-manufactured carb that I saved $75 on when I bought it. Not a very good deal if you figure all the headaches trying to figure out what was going on.

I'm going back out in an hour and run it up and down the road one more time just to be sure all is well.

Rick

There's no way I touch another slant six powered car until I get my 4  rebuilt this winter!

Hopefully dad's car will be safe as long as I don't touch it.....

The car ran fine all weekend at the final race of the season at Mason Dixon. No flutter to be found anywhere! I ran 15.40's all weekend and actually cut 3 decent lights .013, .026, .064 before I returned to my natural ways! Red light, Red light!!! We had a great time even with the red lights!

Next on the agenda is to remove the headers and jack the motor as far up and over as I can to get Doc's oil pump out & replace it with my repaired one. A special thanks to Doc again for sending me a pump right away so I could get ready for the season. Yours will be coming back soon.

Also it is doubtful that I will get my new big bore motor in because I have to rebuild the wrecked truck and that will take me quite a while. We shall see though. Mike will have my head done for sure, I just don't know that I will have the bottom end done by March/April
