I was at the JK today and noticed a mid 80's 225 with a 1bbl aluminum intake. Is this a common manifold, or should I go back for it?

That manifold is mentioned in an article here somewhere; no, they are not common and if you can get it for $40, go for it. Be sure and check for porosity as the welded halves tended to develop that. Epoxy will cure any leaks. Snag the exhaust mfld too.

Weight savings is about your only advantage, I think. You might want to look for other aluminum parts on that car that you could use on yours.

Thanks for the response. I'll go back for it! Is the exhaust manifold different with the aluminum intake?

All exhaust manifolds will interchange (bolt-on) with only minor differences with the choke pocket and heat riser valve.
Later manifolds are stronger so if it is in good condition and cheap, it would be nice to grab.

As for the aluminium 1 bbl intakes, some were 2 piece and welded, others were cast. The cast ones are the nice ones to find.

Thanks Doc, Are the differences in the manifolds readily apparent? I'm new to the /6 world, so I need to know what to look for.

Al T, is that the cast type? What's that to the right of the picture? I don't remember seeing anything that looked like that in the bone yard today!

The manifold in the photo is the later cast alm. one.
The stock manifold on my '76 Duster was a cast aluminum, one-piece 1bbl unit. I think I threw it away.

The one in his pic is the nice cast unit you usually find on Feather Dusters, Dart Lites, and some later cars/ trucks (factory had some spares in the back I'm sure...). Most of the one's on trucks are the electron welded 2 peice jobs (kinda looks like the manifold melted in the middle or a monkey with a stickwelder made a manifold). The pictured cast one is the best one to have, the other type works, but may have porosity problems...some guys use epoxy paint and it's all fine...saves a few lbs off your mill..

1986 and 1987 trucks used a sand cast aluminum intake. Looks exactly like the cast iron ones except a magnet does not stick to it.

Ive got 2 aluminum 1 barrell intakes, the first was original on my 60 Val and the other came from a 82 dodge miser van.Ive been thinking about cutting the 60 manifold and mating a a fourbarrel plate to it to have a locost spare intake.
