I am wanting to rebuild the carb on my 1965 valiant signet and the parts stores will not sell me a kit unless I tell them the carb numbers. It's a 39 year old car and the tag probably went missing in the 70's. If anybody out there has a list of what carb went in what application I would love to know. The car is not from california it has a 225 with automatic and no AC. If you can help thanks in advance. I also apologize for the username I've been having computer problems all morning.

blah, I have a 65 Barracuda with 225, auto and no air. It is basically a Valiant with a fast back. I bought it in CA but don't think that mattered in 65. I do not have the carb tag. I do have the remains of two carb kits. One is a Hygrade # 1636. The other is a GP-Sorensen # 96-625. Both have exactly the same instruction sheet so are probably from the same maker. These kits fit 170 and 225 carbs from 1960 - 1971 and trucks up to 1981.

There is a list of carb numbers as long as your arm for 1964-65 on the instruction sheet. Some are 3999, 4000, 3995, 3965, 3967, 3966, 3833, 3834, 3836, etc. Pick one and run with it or find a different auto parts store!

I agree with Marc, if those idiots expect John Q. Public to walk into their store and supply them with a CARB NUMBER of all things they are either lazy or have no intention of helping you. You gave them the year, make and model, and the engine/trans combination, AC or no AC, California smog or no california smog, that's more than enough. The only other piece of the puzzle is your distributor settings. Either way, there is not that huge a difference between kits. Tell them to do their job and order you a kit and youll compare pieces when it comes in. If they refuse, tell them theyll never see you again. Id expect that kind of treatment if I was a professional mechanic with an account (I am) but theres no excuse for loading a consumer with such a task.

People here forget that most parts counter guys have only been there for 3 months, do what the computer tells them , and 90% of the time have to deal with a fuel injected 80's-90's car....The govt. don't want you to fix your car, and the dealers want John Q. Public to bring it to them so they can make $$$, so only a very small minority of John Q's are actually ordering parts for a ancient fuel metering device....

I was at an AUTOZONE parts store inquiring as to the availability of a trans. cooler for my 63 valiant . He immediatly blurted out,"All Chrysler parts, and nuts and bolts, have reverse threads and I'm not going to be able to help you !!" I said, "O.K.",and left !!!!

LOL, good for you. Just because the parts counter guy doesnt know what he's doing, does not mean you have to tolerate it. Keep looking, you'll find a good one eventually.

The carb kit I ordered from Canadian Tire contained enough parts to repair a few different series of 1920 carb. I did not need to supply a number.

The reason carbs have this number is due to continuous product improvement. Holley made slight design changes over the years which may or may not have involved the housings. These changes were made completely independent of the car's serial number. They ask for the number just to be sure you have the right parts in the kit. But this is not absolutely critical! I had almost enough parts left over to rebuild another carb, for chrissakes. Have them order one, and when it comes in bring the gaskets and other wear items from your old carb and compare parts with the kit. If you come short, just send it back and try a different kit.

ANYONE can do that for you.

If you have a Carter carburetor, asking for a carb kit for a Carter 3678s will get you the kit you need.
