I know my carb needs rebuilt on my 65 Belverdere, I just bought the car.
I went up the garage and removed the air cleaner, and its a Carter?
Is this a bad thing?? Are they junk carbs compared t the Holley?
I don't know what numbers to use, so I took some photos.
Am I better off finding a Holley, or is the Carter a good carb, and do they make kits and floats for them? Here's some photos!

That's a Carter BBS. They generally don't suffer the same internal corrosion problems which kill the Holley 1920s. They are easy to overhaul. The carburetor number was on a stamped tag which is missing from yours.

Are those any good? Or am I kinda screwed on trying to find out the kit I need?

If you order by application you'll probably get the right kit, but since the BBS was only used on earlier engines you'll have to ask for a something late '60s.

My car is a 1965....
I just called my local guy, he's an older fashioned parts store.
He said he was hoping for the tag.
The numbers I gave him were no good that is stamped on the carb itself.
He did say that from 1960-1967, the carter one barrels took the same kit. But if mine is not the original carb, I dunno.
I don't know wether to or not?

I am debating on ordering the kit now. But I need one!

Most carb kits are generic and have all the gaskets you will need for any version of that particular carb model. Just order the kit but pay VERY close attention matching the new gaskets to the old ones and to the holes in the body castings.

I am going to order it. I hope the accelerator pump, and other come with it, and fit. i highly doubt anyone messed with this car. Although someone messed with the car before.
This car is so stock it even has the am radio in it still.
I was going to pay 100 bucks to have it done. This guy near me is good!
But...if I give him the wrong kit...etc. It will be a nightmare. I am afraid to try it myself. Although it would save me money.
I probably should just buy a 2 barrel and be done with it....

Rebuilding a one barrel carb is very very easy. Go slow, get a clean flat workspace, and you can do it yourself with basic hand tools.

now you got me wondering. Maybe I should. I built a ton of solex carbs on Beetles forever. I never tried a different carb yet.
I am gonna have him order the kit. I am sure it has to work. If it is 60-67 all the same. I am sure it will be fine. Mine hopefully is the original 65 carb on it.

I just ordered the kit from the little independent store down the street. He actually takes the time to look in books.
He did relook, and said the BBS takes the same kit from 60-71.
After relooking, he can't get me a float. Its obsolete. Ugh!! Hope my float is okay.

I was just looking at the bottom of the carb.
Looks like someone put a screw into a existing hole. I can tell the hole is stock. But is there supposed to be a screw there? The screw don't look stock.

That could be distributor vacuum advance, since the hole is above the throttle plate.

Thats odd. The advance is going to a different port. Car runs great, for except the rich condition. Mild sputtering, mostly at idle.

Good grief. No, thre isn't supposed to be a wood screw through the carburetor body.

I second the guess that that is supposed to be the distributor vacuum advance fitting (which begs the questions, what is the distributor vacuum advance pod plugged into now?). There is supposed to be a small tube stakes into that hole and a vacuum line from the tube to the vacuum advanc epod on the distributor. Your only hope is to find a parts carb with a tube the right size to fit into that hole and that you can stake or JB weld or somehow hold the tube in place in that hole.

I would be leery of this carb. It may be fine, but a wood screw jammed into the carb doesn't inspire confidence in how prior owners treated that carb.
