i have just bought a 65 valiant 2 door. it has the 225 and it is going to need the engine rebuilt. i want to get this car to beat my friends 66 ford fairlane. he has a 289 bored a stroked with on the floor automatic trans.

i have a 225 with a 3 on the tree trans. i would like to put a hyper pak intake on it. i would like to know what compression ratio to use and how to get it. i am going to put in a preformance cam. but i dont know wich one to use. i will use over sized valves with heavier springs, and hardened push rods. i will use dual exhaust but dont know where to get them.

i would also like to be able to use nos. (but it is not a must)

i dont know alot about this stuff so anything you guys can inform me about will help. thanks alot.

First, go to the 'articles' section of the board and read through the slant sickness article.... that should give you a proven recipe for 'flight'. Pay close attention to the rear gear ratio also and get rid of the 3 on the tree in favor of a four on the floor....(heck even 3 on the floor with an A-230 synchro'ed box is better, than your current peanut box...)

You have an excellent car to start with. Your rear axle ratio should be 3.23,,,,a good start. Look for a 4 or 5 spd like DI suggested and keep the car as light as possible. Look for some good tires to hook it all up.

If you go with the 'straight' model is A-833 (these can be $$$ sometimes because they aren't as common as they used to be.
The OD box (A-833OD) is easier to find and a bit cheaper (I bought one not too long back with everything from the flywheel to the shifter, rods and yoke, for $150 total....

It's a wide ratio box so you get a pretty nasty 'dump' in RPM in 1 to 2nd shifting, but the beauty of it is the low 1st gear ratio 3.09:1 , and the .073:1 OD ratio (which means that you can later run some nice 'drag gearing' and still get good mileage...I run a 3.55 and know I could literally run a 3.91 under there and still get good mileage - incidentally the 3.55:1 rear in OD is a bit more granny than a guy with an automatic and a 2.76:1 rear gear....LOL)

The article section also has an awesome clip on 4 and 3 speeds that should cover some of the 'pro's and con's' along with rebuilding them.

keep asking questions, by the time you think you've asked enough you'll look back and see you've learned a lot and will be ready to ask more...
