My 225 with the Carter BBS has been running a little rich. Mileage is down, it was loading up when the choke was on and has been flooding when shut down while hot for the last couple years. No amount of tinkering or rebuilding seemed to help. I might have discovered the problem when I cleaned the carb last week.

You all may know about all this, but I found that the float pin retainer wasn't retaining the float very well. It is an inverted U shaped clip that holds the float pin down. The top of the inverted U is held down by the bowl cover/air horn. There is a little flat on the underside of the cover where the clip bears. Mine was loose and I think it was letting the float rise and so keeping the fuel level to high in the carb.

I adjusted the clip by bending a smaller radius curve in the top. I checked it before assembly by putting in the float pin and retaining clip, laying the old gasket on top and then putting the cover on. Then I could use a small screw driver through the needle and seat assembly/inlet hole to see if the pin was loose. It took a few trys but i got it tight.

The jury is still out on mileage improvements. It no longer loads up at idle when cold and the choke is closed. The hot flooding problem seems to be much better. I have another BBS I got for spare parts and it also has a loose float pin so the problem is not unique to one carb.

Great tip, that float pin hold down is something most rebuilders would overlook.
When it comes to carb rebuilding, attention to all the little inter-workings and details makes all the difference.
