1970 Dodge Dart Custom with 225. When I start my dart, it sometimes sound like something is being hit with a large hammer instide my engine compartment. Sometime's it's really minor, quiet and you can't really feel it, and sometimes it's really loud, and it kinda bangs the car around and sounds like the engine's about to fly off. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help.

Does it ever happen other then at start ups?

Other than that, it sounds like a busted motor mount, and since its a 70, its makes me think broken mount even more considering it has the small and less reilable biscuit mounts...

If the noise is a knocking sound that stops when the oil light goes out, you may have excess clearance in a connecting rod bearing.

If this is the case, you may want to use some thicker motor oil but doing this is only a short term solution.
If it is a worn bearing, it is best to have them replaced before one "pounds-out" and ruins a crankshaft journal.

Yes, motormount sounds more like it because that's been suggested in the past. Is that something that's reasonable to fix, and an 18 year old kid with some wrenches and such can do or should I take it in? I hate taking it in, because my dad takes it for me and never really tells me what they did, just what they fixed... so it's always like "well yeah, but what does that mean?" For example, 'they' recently fixed my power steering but yet, it's still leaking... I just never know what to think, and wish I could do all the work on my own.

Do you have a floor jack or an engine hoist? You'll need one or the other to displace the engine a bit so it will clear the mount screws and take the tension off them so you can swap the mount.

Other then that you can do the job with basic tools.

Start up the car, and look at the mount while your under the hood and play with the throttle by hand to see if anything is loose or jumping around.

I had an Aspen that was doing this same thing, but would be fine
once the engine was running. It turned out to be the starter was bad.
It was not engaging correctly with the teeth on the converter.
You might check this out also. Good luck!
