My wife, Samantha, and I make crank scrapers for many different engines and we have had a number of people ask us to make patterns for the slant six.

We need to borrow the 170, 198, and 225 short block and pan from enthusiasts in the Tampa Bay area. In exchange you would receive a free crank scraper of your choice. At present we have patterns for about 150 engines. The engine is not harmed as we only need to make a plastic template. We can pick up and return your engines promptly.

For those of you unfamiliar with crank scrapers, they have been in use for at least 40 years (Pontiac GTO 389 had one) and DaimlerChrysler, BMW, and Nissan (among others) use them in some of their current engines. They are different from windage trays though some windage trays have scrapers incorporated into them. This scraper could be used with (and would work well with) the old Mopar and "Mikes" windage tray.

A crank scraper actively strips out entrained oil from the windage cloud which otherwise creates a parasitic drag/load on the engine. This frees up power that your engine is already making. A scraper does not actually touch any of the rotating assembly and still allows plenty of oil to reach the cylinder walls and internally positioned cams, etc.

So what are the differences between a windage tray and a crank scraper? Does a windage tray not scrape oil from the crank already, or does it just create a barrier preventing the oil in the sump from getting entangled in the crank?

If I had one of these, would I even need a windage tray? Cuz finding one of those isn't easy as it is, and sooner or later I gotta have something in the oil pan.

Yes the windage tray keeps the oil in the sump from getting whipped up around the crank.... but it doesn't get any oil off of th crank that's already there. The scraper, on the other hand, will clear off the excess oil on the crank, but won't stop the crank from whipping up the oil in the sump.

In a perfect world you'd run both.

If you get these up and running, I'm more than interested in one. for a long rod 225. (stock 225 should work)

Hi All,

I will putting up eBay and website ads for the slant six scrapers shortly. You can see pics of them there. Special thanks to Robert and Charlie for lending me engines!

I will still be needing a 198 and Charlie mentioned that the post 1976 225 had a cast crank -- I wanted to check the pattern on one of those.

Charlie lent me a stock windage tray and alternate pan/pickup and there is no problem with using either.
