in my 71 dart slant 6, i have a 904 torqueflight. it seems that all of a sudden, reverse isnt working at all. before when i put it into reverse, it seemed to slip in, and it would reverse very slowly, then when i slightly accelerated, and rolled back a foot or so, it clunked in and worked fine. now all of a sudden i go to back out, and i put it in reverse, the idle dropps a little, no large clunk, and doesnt reverse, almost like its in neutral, but it isnt. i messed with the gear selector shaft, that isnt the problem. transmission fluid is at proper level. what could it be? thanks

Problem with the rear band, if everything else works.

If not the band, the servo that applies the band. Or even the strut that links them. Or no pressure from the valve body. Or...

I should have been more clear. rear band "system" problem. Anything that keeps the rear band from clamping the drum. Most likely the band itself, or the strut. Drop the pan and take a look. If it is the band itself, trans needs to be disassembled. If it is the strut, might be possible to repair, without pulling trans.

reverse is sometimes the first to go .What u need is a new, rebuilt, or reconditioned transmission. My suggestion is to never give it throttle until you hear it engage. This is an ongoing battle between me and my friends.I've had numerous buddies w trannys that are slow to engage.I always told them that on first startup to throw it into neutral and chill for awhile,"1 or 2 minutes or longer", and then throw it into gear. But I would watch them start it and go b 4 the $#!+ was warmed up and couple months later tranny's shot. Others would try to tell me that this wouldn't make a difference at all ..any feedback????

Idle in neutral good, because the converter fills fastest in neutral . Warm-up till engine oil pressure comes up and stabilizes. Long warm-ups are neither warranted nor advised. Kick the fast idle down before you engage reverse, or you may snap the end off the band.
