I removed the head from my rebuilt 170 today to recieve the new CompCams 264s and to have the head shaved to gain 9.5 to 9.8 compression and found a niceley rebuilt .030 over bottom end ,it seems that the guy that built this engine spent some time on it as everything was meticulous inside the block and the pistons set .002 in the hole and block deck has not been shaved.
The head though has been shaved and I need to know how to figure how much it was cut.Im sure it was nothing more than a cleanup but Im gonna need to cut more to raise my compression so i need to figure out how many cc's to thousandth's or somthing.
Also can someone give me the formula for figuring cubic inchs please.
One more question,I was told that the Mopar performance big block cam bushings would work for the slant ,does anyone know if this is true or not.
Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to one on line displacement calculator, there are many out on the web:
http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/calc ... cement.htm

A rule of thumb for the SL6 head, you get 1 cc of chamber reduction for every .00666... that is surfaced off the head.

As for the "cam bushing", are you talking about a thrust washer behind the timing gear or the cam bearings?

If your talking about the offset bushing, to degree the cam, the big block ones fit. Also chevy bushings work, fine.

Thanks guys, but I posted some mis information(MUST HAVE HAD A BRAIN FART) the piston is about .066 down in the hole and that seems a little much for what is suppose to be 0 deck engine but like I said the block has not been cut and the head "appears" to have had about .030 cut off by comparing to a known uncut head. The the ridge around the chamber is shorter by about .030.I will cc to make sure.
Also ,I noticed in my 60 shop manual that the comp ratio calls out at 8.6 to 1 and was wondering if that may be the difference in the chambers on my 60 head.
Thanks again

The head chambers on SL6 heads are all around 54 cc's, un-cut.
.066 negitive deck is a lot for a 170, do you know who made the pistons?

At this point you should do some careful measuring, including a check of the head chamber volumn. With that information, you can calculate the exact compression ratio and make the needed adjustment(s)

There is a low compression piston for the slant. I hope you didn't get that one by mistake.

I dont know who made the pistons as the engine was built when i got it but they are flat tops with .030 stamped into the tops.I really hope I can get this stuff to work.

Its worse than I thought, the pistons are actually .073 in the bores.I have the head on the kitchen table right now getting ready to measure the chambers. This is starting to suck.....really hard.
