My 86 truck, 38,000 miles with the super six conversion and HEI. Everything else is stock.

Ever since the 2 barrel was installed the truck has been hard to start when cold. If I start it every day it seems to start easier than if I leave it set for 2 or 3 days. I thought it was fuel draining back out of the carb, but I replaced the seat in the carb with the newer (better style) seat that Dan recommended and it made no difference. I just came home today and pulled the air cleaner and crawled up into the engine bay and looked down into the carb. Choke is fully closed as it should be. I opened the choke and pushed the throttle back and I got a nice long shot out of the accelerator pump. (I have checked this several times before) Today it started with just another pump or 2 on the throttle and ran fine. But it had been run yesterday, plus it is 60 degrees out.

Normally when it is 30 or 40 degrees and it has set for a couple days it will not even try to start at first. Then I have to crank the engine for 5-8 seconds, pump it 2 or 3 times and it will try and start. If it doesn't start, I pump it 2 more times and it kicks off. It just seems like fuel is draining out of the carb, but when I check it it has not. So what am I missing? It has the electric choke conversion on it also.

This truck runs fine, idles fine , gets decent mileage but it is just not easy to start. I'd like to get it fixed before I sell it here in the next couple months.

Rick

Only thing I can think of is a bit off the wall. My friend Vern had a mint 75 Vega that did almost the exact same thing. Ran like a scalded ape once warmed up but did not want to start in the morning. I told him I'd give it a look because he was baffled; turns out the float level in his carb was too high, and it allowed gas to seep into the intake and cylinders. I don't know if that was really the culprit or if it was a case of serendipity, but I set the float to the proper level and it never had that problem again.

So I guess all I have to contribute to this is to suggest going back and recheck all the basics.
