Do aluminum A833 4 speed manual overdrives excist? Were they ever made?

I'll go for a 5 speed tranny instead of an OD. OD trannies shares shaft for 2nd gear/OD. They tend to eat up that shaft resulting in noisy 2nd speed...

Yes, aluminum case A833 OVERDRIVE transmissions exist.

The A-833OD came out in 1975, and it started as a cast iron cased unit with coarse spline gearing, for the 1976 model year the casing was replaced with an aluminum one (even all the way up to the 1987 run of trucks...).

Things to 'check':

Front bearing retainer was 5.125" in diameter and the front shift pawl is pointing down (due to the location of the 'direct' and OD gears on the mainshaft, to keep the 'H' shift pattern). OD is .73:1 on this unit, it is wide ratio. If heavily abused (like behind a warmed up V-8), you might see some worn synchros (hard shifting), cracked case (abuse), and when torn down check the counter shaft holes in the aluminum case they can be 'egged' if badly worn/abused.


These are great for daily driver cars, the rpm drop depending on your rear end ratio can be horrid for racing though (about 1000 on shifts between 1-2, 2-3, and about 3-500 on 3-OD)....

I have had several overdrive 833s. The F body short shaft units have been entirely aluminum. Mine have been from 77 or so Aspens/Volares. Although I have seen long shaft aluminum 833s, I have never found one. All the truck OD 833s around here have an aluminum body, with a cast iron tailshaft housing.

I have 2 of em. One is a long tail out of a van about a '78, 100%cast iron case. The other is an A or F body short tail version, has an aluminum case with a cast iron tail. The one that I swapped into my old 79 D 100 was a short tail all aluminum version. PS; Sorry, my 2 that I have now are NOT for sale!

You can sometimes find 833 O/D transmissions in 1981-86 General Motors: Chevy and GMC light trucks. I believe the 5 1/8" retainer is also standard with GM manual transmissions such as the SM465. The GM versions look the same as Chryser but have a different input shaft, I believe GM trucks have the long tailhousing 833. Make sure you get the Chrysler version. My brother-in-law had a '85 Chevy with an 833 O/D.
