 Post subject: Tranny not downshifting
PostPosted: Thu Mar 11, 2004 9:35 pm
I have 1985 Ram D100 w 3 speed auto tranny all stock.
It was sitting for a while(about 2 mts) and before i last parked it, the tranny worked flawlessly.
What happens now is, that on the shift from 1st to second it sounds like it has a "hickup" or a slip of some sort.
2nd to third works fine.
Also when i'm already moving a speed and floor the gas pedal...it dosen't downshift at all.... and i know that it did before.
I have checked the tranny fluid and the level is ok.
I have changed the fluid about 6 mts ago, so that shouldn't be the problem.
Is there anything that could happen to it while sitting and is there a chance, that it will go back to normal when i drive it a little longer?

Not likely...

Sounds like your kickdown rods have slipped/fallen out of adjustment. Take off the aircleaner housing, and look at the carburetor where the throttle cable hooks up to the throttle linkage. On the bottom of this same linkage, there should be a rod going straight down (more or less) to some braketry bolted to the manifolds (This should all be on the back side (firewall) side of the carb). This rod is part of your transmission kickdown linkage. If you follow all the rods back to the tranny, you will see how they push a lever on the tranny back as the throttle is opened. The kickdown should be adjusted so that the lever is all the way back on the trans when the carb is at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) aka the gas pedal is floored.

Check yours to see if this is the case. If it is not, adjust it so it is (there are a couple adjustment points) I have a feeling you have a nut/bolt from the linkage that rattled loose. Good luck :)
