Greetings. I believe you are referring to what is called the "kickdown linkage." The short answer is yes, if you have an automatic transmission you MUST have some form of kickdown linkage. If you do not have a functioning kickdown linkage your transmission will fail.

If your stock rod and lever linkage is missing you can find cable style linkages on eBay or other sources fairly cheap.

Can someone explain how and why the trans will fail if the kickdown is missing?

If the transmission throttle pressure linkage is not connected the transmission oil pressure will be low reducing the holding capacity of the clutches and bands. If the clutches or bands slip the transmission burns up.

The throttle pressure is also a key input to the valve body to achieve the correct shift point. Throttle pressure opposes governor pressure in the transmission. More/increased throttle pressure requires a higher governor pressure (road speed) to command an up-shift. High throttle pressure also commands earlier downshifts. The throttle pressure system is not a simple kickdown as with some other makes. It is a vital input to the transmission and affects all the shift points.

The first thing that will happen is the link will fall out of the front band apply. Things will go downhill from there.

Trust me, I found out firsthand on a '72 904.

You will need to fabricate an arm on the carb so opening the throttle will pull the cable (instead of push the rod) and you will need to devise a clamp of some sort for the cable up by the carburetor.
