240k? Nice. Check compression first to make sure the rings are still good and not letting any oil through, and make sure there is no excessive blowby. Do a basic tuneup, replace plugs/cap and wires if necessary.

If you want to go one step further install an aftermarket multiple spark igniton type box to ensure a more complete burn (MSD brand model 6a box even has a CARB # so you can legitimately pass smog with one installed). A hotter msd blaster2 coil (also has CARB#) would also help things out.

Do you have leanburn/esc ignition?

Im unfamiliar with lean burn and don't know what blow by is my mecnanic friend checked compression and said it was acceptable could be a little better but not bad. We seem to try everthing but still too rich that is why i replace the carb and the Cat.

Ah ok electronic ignition... so neither leanburn or esc, which is confirmed because you said you have a vaccum advance pod on your distributor.

Well, make sure the magnetic pickup in the distributor is gapped properly. I believe playing with timing (retarding, but I could be wrong) helps emissions as well.

Do you remember what the compression numbers were?

Fyi, blowby is when some of the combustion mixture leaks past the piston rings and pressurizes the crankcase.

Good luck on passing man, sometimes it can be tough on the older engines, especially california smog.

Oh, just thought of it, deffinately adjust the valves.
