Hello guys. regards from Chile.

i have an issue... my aspen 1979 originally have a TF A904 tranny (doesn´t work) and i have 2 ways to solve that.

1.- buy a rebuilt kit from ebay and repair the TF A904

2.- i have in my yard an A230 3 speed from a 77 Volare, shifter, pedals clutch and every thing to do the swap.

my question is... go for the original A904...
opinions of the toledo trans parts?

or do the swap...?
it´s recommended?
it will increase the HP´s?
may i change the diff?
the ratio of the trannys are similar?
the slanty will run the same like the A904.?
the durability its better than AT?

thanks so much for your advices..

regards from Chile...

PS sorry about my english.

The rear axle ratio is generally lower (higher numerically) when the car is equipped with a manual transmission. If the axle ratio is less than 3.21:1 then I would stay with the automatic for good performance. The A904 is not difficult to rebuild and gives very good service in most cases. It is likely that less labor is involved to rebuild the automatic than to do the manual transmission conversion.

thanks joshie225
my diff ratio is 17thoot/48thoot... probably 2.82:1
the A904 ratio is 2.70/1.54/1.0
the A230 ratio is 2.55/1.45/1.0

how may i know what is better? more fuel economy, best driving. when i drove the A904 it´s like a turbine... so smooth, but the top speed is too low... juts 90 or 100 km/h.. if i swap to A230 will increase the top speed?
will be smoother like the A904...? so many asks comes to my brain...

thanks again.

A-230 should be a 3.08/1.70/1.00 if it's a late 70's box behind a 225.

It would be easier to rebuild the A-904 than go through all the work to convert and chop up the floor pans to make the 3 speed work. (And even then, you may find the A-230 may need to be rebuilt anyway...).

If you are having issues trying to get above 100 KpH, then most likely you need to work on: Making sure your exhaust pipe isn't restricted (catalytic convertor may clogged), make sure your engine has been tuned up and timed right, make sure the carburator is functioning correctly and in good shape.... If after that you find everything is in good working order, since your car is fairly heavy in stock trim...going to a better gear ratio like Josh said - 3.21 is a good "street" performance gear (you will need a new speedo gear to make it read right)...

If looking for more power/ acceleration, etc... going to the 2 barrel carburator setup, and making sure your camshaft is degreed correctly will help.

With the A-904 and 2.82:1 ring and pinion gears, you should be able to go higher speeds, assuming your engine is running normally. 90-100 kph (~65 mph) sounds really slow, you should be able to reach 150 kph (~90-95 mph) easily. With 3:23 rear end gears I took my slant up to well over 100 mph and that was the sick-badly-in-need-of-a-rebuild-out-of-tune engine that I bought the car with...that all said, I'm not advocating breaking any speed laws...

If the 904 was slipping it would severely limit top speed.

The three speed with a 2.8 rear will be hell on clutches.
