My drive shaft spins, but my tires don't turn!!!!!! :x

It's an 8 3/4 with the 741 center section with a 3.23 Sure Grip, Moser Axles. I got the center section from a fellow Slant 6er in Virginia who said it was good. The Moser axles are 30 spline and the correct length with green bearings. Diameter at splines is 1 5/16".

I pulled the axles and will pull the center section tonight. That way I can see if the axles are splining up correctly.

The wheels spin up on jackstands, but not with vehicle weight on them. I can force one wheel to spin by hand with the vehicle in park and one wheel on the ground.

Any suggestions? It seems like the likely culprit is the axles not splining correctly. Thanks.

Rob

??? :? ???
Are the axles long enough? I don't have one here, but I guess it would need to be around 25"-26" long, measured from the bearing flange to the splined axle end. It can be, actually needs to be, a little shorter than a stock axle when using the green bearings.
Stock spline count is 30, I don't know of any other count.
Before installing a 8.75 pig with sure grip, slip an axle in both ends to make sure the sure grip splines are lined up.

Thanks Cecil,
I pulled the center section last night and was taking some measurements and checking splines, etc. The axles spline into the sure grip okay. I re-installed the axles in the housing and measured the distance between the ends. It is 2 9/16" which seems a bit much just by looking at it. I will compare with two other 8 3/4 rears that I have. One is a shortened one Doc sent me and the other is right out from under a car at the salvage yard. If there is a big difference, maybe that's the problem.

I got the housing in a parts deal years ago. It is supposed to be an original A body housing and went right in to my Dart. I'm sure I measured the housing width to verify before I ordered the Moser A body axles. Maybe it's actually an early B body housing with the perches moved to fit the A body or something. :?

The cold rain made me quit last night before any further checking. I didn't have enough side clearance to pull the right axle in the garage. :x

Just for everyone's information...

I called Moser and here's the measurements

The distance between the ends of the axles for an 8 3/4 rear end should be 1 1/2" (not 2 9/16")

(True) A body housing length end to end is 52 5/8"

Early B body housing length end to end is 54 1/8' - 54 7/8"

I probably have a B body rear with A body axles. :x

One more thing I didn't do right the first time... I sure am learning a lot though. Albeit the hard way. :D

Are the A-body axles you have big bolt or small bolt? I'm sure if they're big bolt that somebody would buy them off of you.

They are big bolt pattern with long screw in studs, but I found someone locally that is going to narrow my housing down to A body specs so I can use these axles. It should also give me back the little bit of room I lost to fit my 7" wide slot mags. I thought it was just the bigger brakes that made me lose the room

Oh the lessons I'm learning about checking and double checking and not taking anything for granted!

That's for sure Rob. I have had 2 people try to sell me "A-body" housings that were in fact E-body. E's are about 6" wider than A.

I got this thing out and re-measured. I think it must have been narrowed or something. It's not as wide as a B body, but is wider than what an A body should be. It only needs to be shortened by about 1 1/8" total. When installed the axles are only splining up with the the outer sets of splines on the sure grip.

I'm dropping it off this evening to be shortened.

Okay, it fits now and both tires spin pretty good! :D 8)

I had the housing and axles both shortened just a tad so I could fit nice big tires.

Now that the cam is broken in a little I took it down the street last night and got into it a little. The 318  has some get up and go to it! The Sure Grip works just fine. 8)

Then the new Holley carb started flooding really bad :x .....

Gotta love it!
