Was glancing at my build sheet today, and noticed it says California Exhaust at the bottom under Remarks.

Can anyone tell me the differences between the Calif. exhaust engines and the regular emission engines?

I hate Webshots, can't link to it from anywhere. Click on the WWW button under my sig and look for the Actual Broadcast Sheet pic, it's sideways.

It's a 1974 Swinger, and the cat seems to be identical to other Darts with catalytic converters. My car does have a decal on it stating it's emissions requirements for the state of California. Maybe it was just tuned differently? I'll try and get a better pic of the decal.

Hmm, test pipe, good idea. Although I might just replace it with a newer, lighter, more efficient cat, since I like the idea of a older car putting out less pollution. Whatever I do, it'll have to wait until I upgrade the exhaust.

I think I may have figured out what the 1974 California Exhaust package was (or at least what was on my car). I think it was just a regular (49-states) '74 emissions package with an added air pump, single cat, and maybe a different tune on the carb to meet the strict California emissions standard. It looks like there were other things hooked into the EGR system, but they must have been removed before I got the car.

I think your cars after the cut-off for emissions so if you went to California they'd have to test you. So when you upgrade it would probably be a good idea to get a hi-performance cat. and muffler in case you ever want/need to go to California. I don't know of anywhere that test 73's, so as far as I know I can stick a badly running V8 with a rusty, holy exhaust and emissions wouldn't care at all . Think I'll keep my slant and my glasspack.

74 cars never got cats here in CA. Been here all my life and have a 74 duster. Air pump and exhaust I can see but not cats

My car was built in December '73, maybe while they were instituting a changeover to the '75 California Exhaust system? My buddy's '75 (49-states emissions) Valiant was built January '74 and it has a catalytic converter... Odd.

Now I've got to find an California Exhaust A-body built in October '73, see if it's got a catalytic converter setup like mine. I'm on a mission now.
