This was actually a reman carb that functioned horribly. I have not had much luck with those. Anyway, I did a rebuild after it had only been on a few days. Everything got taken apart, bathed and blown out. Then I set everything to specs. What always puzzles me is that I have put on several different carbs on this machine (both 1920 and 1945) and have yet to get one that functions well overall. There is no consistency either so that logically tells me that my problem still is in the carb. I have never had this much difficulty with any other engine/carb in my life. Thanks for the tips, I will try to get a different jet and see how that goes. BTW, the mixture screw on the 1920 is not a reverse one is it? Does turning it in make it more lean? Thanks.

Mike

Yes. Turning the screw in will lean it out. You should not have to turn the screw farther out than 3 turns to achieve a smooth idle. I have run these carbs with the mixture screw turned as little as 3/4 of a turn out.
If you are using a reman carb then you really should check the jet size. I have heard stories from slant six owners who found that their remanufactured carb had a size 51 jet in it! Waaaaay too lean.

I'll check the jet size when I get home. I am assuming that since it has been only a week since the rebuild that I can use those same gaskets, pump, etc. I have not had to turn my idle mixture screw out much so that is good news. Thanks.

Sounds like you may have ruptured the diaphragm in the vacuum pod on the distributor.

Here's a cuple questions:

Some of the Holley 1920s had a big hole on the base plate which matched a hole on the intake. I am not positive what this vacuum feed was for but you may need to have that be working. Maybe someone else can provide the fuction of this hole.

I'm thinking the same thing, either that or it isnt calibrated for the car. You should also replace that hose, it may have a tear in it somewhere. But it sounds to me like your distributor is giving you trouble and leading you astray.

(Lou, I had this port on the 1920 I just pulled off. That port was connected to a steel tube that ran to the #3 leg of the exhaust manifold, and its purpose seemed to be to run heated exhaust gases through the baseplate of the carb for preheating. I traced this channel through the base of the carb and it ran gases through to a small hole drilled in the intake mounting flange.)

For the moment, I just depend on the mechanical advance and plug the port on the carb. This gives me only about 10 to 12 degrees advance added to my initial setting. (thats about 22 deg. total) It's no race car, but it's way better than the horrible stumble I was getting with the vac line connected.
I would really like to hear if someone has another answer to the problem.
Holy crap.

If you only have 22 total your performance must really be hurting. I ran a Prestolite for a few days on my car with 26 total at 1600 RPM, and I was not going ANYWHERE with my foot to the mat. You need to get that can hooked back up. I think my Chrysler dizzy has a 15r? advance rotor, and the can is a 6.5X. That combo is good for 37* total at 1700 and it has plenty of pep. Could be better though...
