I was thinking if he went off of the same terminal from the starter relay that the small wire on the starter solenoid is wired from that it would be a safe way to go but maybe not
100% won't work. GM has an R terminal on the starter solenoid to bypass the Resistor to the ignition coil during cranking. Ford has an "I" or Ignition terminal on their starter relay to bypass the ballast or resistance wire. Without that auxiliary starter relay or solenoid contact the switching to bypass the ballast resistor has to happen elsewhere. Chrysler chose the ignition switch which is why we have Ign 1 and Ign 2. The easiest thing to do is run the ignition switch to the ballast resistor, disconnect the starter solenoid from the ignition circuit and simply suffer reduced ignition output during cranking. It's not like this test stand is operating above the Arctic Circle.

A better solution is to throw away the Chrysler ignition box and ballast resistor and use a GM HEI module.

ok... forgot the GMs had that extra terminal on their starters...…. haven't had to mess with a GM that old in a while. I just remember they had a bunch of wiring taken off the starter terminals...…

No luck,

It maybe did a little better, but lumbered along for 2 or 3 seconds. I think I've killed my starter too. Pretty sure smoke is bad. I didn't even run it as hard or as long as last time, but am assuming I did some damage on the first attempt. I ran it pretty hard and long there. Would you guys recommend I stop using the starter now and turn it in as a core or burn it out? Without taking my house with it, lol. I also noticed I am leaking some fuel out of the throttle return spring at the base of the Carter 2 barrel carb. Could that me an issue why it wasn't running? I tried pouring a little gas in the carb and spraying some autozone carb cleaner into it.

Also, glad the schematic lived up to muster.

Are you using the OE style large starter or a mini starter?
Mini starters are cheap at the pull a parts or get one from AZ
with the lifetime warranty.

A rebuilt OE large style. Think I got it off rock auto. I'll pick one up from Auto Zone next time, thanks for the tip. What are the benifits of the small starter and what vehicles are they on?

Thank you,

Paul
