Hello Eveyone

Hope to learn from everyone on the board

I recently bought a 1971 Dodge D100 with slant 6 225

Got it running Idles etc

However under load it sputters and acts like its running out of gas

I changed fuel filter and pcv valve

Checked for spark at every cylinder. confirmed

newer plugs and points wires

plug gap .035
point gap .019
idle rpm 700
advance at Idle 16 Cant get it lower distributor hits hard stop

tried rotating wires clockwise and counterclockwise one space could not get her to fire.

Im running out of ideas

the only thing I can think of is finding tdc at cylinder #1 and resetting the distributor

Also burns a lot of oil (seperate issue)

thanks for any ideas

the timing is at idle I do not have a reading with mechanical advance.

thanks for any help to get studdering out of engine

There is a second bolt that holds the distributor hold-down plate to the underside of the distributor body -- if you cannot achieve the right basic ignition timing within the length of the slotted hole where the hold-down plate sits on the block, you loosen the 2nd bolt on the underside of the distributor and rotate the plate relative to the distributor body to get the adjustment range you need. Try for 5° BTDC.

The truck is probably due for a thorough tune-up and carburetor rebuild. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this post. The engine will need a valve adjustment as well.

question: did you removed the distributor vacuum hose from the distributor, and plugged it so the carburetor has no vacuum leak? Just checking, that is the way that has to be done. About the distributor, I think you have to remove it, not sure if in a truck you can access the bolt because of how much room the engine bay has. SlantSixDan literature and links recommendations for tune-up are really useful, check them.

Hello

Yes I put a plug on the vacuum canister and insert a plug in the line leading to the carb.

I do not see any differences thus telling me the vacuum diaphragm may be bad.

I intend to attach a clean hose and try to get it to move

thanks for the reminder

It's likely, at this age, that the damper ring has slipped and the mark is not in the right place. 16° BTDC with a stock engine will induce pinging, but will idle well. If the engine won't take throttle and you have bright blue sparks, it's likely a carb issue as was mentioned.

Well

I did locate the nut on the underside. of the distributor,

Yes it allowed me to reduce the advance.

I tried 14, 10,8, 7, 6 and 0 timing advance

all results the same shuddering on acceleration

does anyone feel this may be a fuel issue

new filter

poured berrymans down carb and decarbed top engine.

idle is 720

gap .035

points arc well and clean spark .019 gap dwell shows 38 but is very old and not accurate

any ideas would be welcome

thanks

yes you have to plug the carb side, but you don't also have to plug the vac advance. vacuum from the carb work on the vac advance, not the other way around. just unhook that hose from the vacuum advance, leave it on the carb side, put a screw or golf tee in the now-loose end and that's all you need to do when you set timing.....

top-what?

If the damper ring has slipped, and it wasnt accurate at 16* it wont be accurate at 10*, or 7*, or 0* (AKA TDC)

Has the valve lash been checked?
You really should start there because everything else you test, adjust or suspect is based on correct valve lash.
http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... ht=#p72139

Make sure the lash is set correctly, before spending time on any other trouble-shooting.

My mistake could see my post so I inserted a top reply.

I too thought the damper may have slipped
found TDC and its very close

Yes, valve lash first, like Doc said. Next might be an accelerator pump replacement...
