I want to put in a new stereo am/fm cd radio in place of the am only radio in my 1973 dart...one choice is to remove old radio and replace with new, but would need to cutup the dash, there is only holes for the knobs and pushbutton and station... what other choices do I have?...under dash?
Also looking at wiring diagram, I think there is only 2 leads from the old radio, where as my new radio has about 14 leads, speakers account for 8 of these leads, what about the rest? thanks in advance...Jerry

The 8 speaker leads are for 2 front speakers (left/right) And 2 rear speaker (L/R).

The other six are probably:

*1 Groundwire (black)
*1 constant 12volt (For radio/clock memory)
* 1 12 volt after ignition switch is on ( Or any other on-off switch)
* 1 for an electric antenna ( blue?)
*1 wire ( with amp-rem) as feed for an extra amp.
* 1 maybe for a column remote control

( I made a console for my '65 Dart. You can make one out of cardboard and then use that to make one out of 3 pieces of wood. I put my aftermarketradio, speakers, backup tv, cb radio, alarmlightswitch and some other switches in there. I'll be putting the same carpet on the sides and spraypaint the front. Still have to do that. No mods to the car required and you can always remove the whole unit if you decide to sell or go back t original.)

Here's a pic of the console I made:

I have an after market cassette tape/radio in my 73 dart and I didn't have to cut anything. Mine is a cheaper one with one knob on each side. Anything else, and you'll need to do some cutting or like 65 Dutch Dart said.

If it's a restoration, or a potential restoration, I wouldn't cut the dash. If you are really concerned about stock looks, there is a company that advertises in Hemmings that will put modern electronics inside the stock package. I don't know what they do in the case of a CD or tape system.

I didn't worry about cutting the dash on my '64 convertible, because it's not stock anyway. It's my daily driver and I want it to be comfortable so I installed a late model Mopar AM/FM/Cassette and I love it. I also cut the dash for the AC vents so it didn't make much difference what I did for the radio.

thanks to 65 Dutch Dart, slanted 73, and 64 convert for your replies...No, I am not doing a restoration, it's a 20 mile trip daily driver, I need some distraction, music etc...I like 65 Dutch Dart's idea, looks like project time is coming......thanks again...Jerry

You might look into these:

We're looking to do something "secret" in my son's '74 Dart Sport, also.

i used cable ties to fasten it to my ac vents(underdash factory setup) someone else had used wires i believe, i was going to make a console type setup but didnt have enough room with the center shifter console(67 dart gt) ran wires up under the dash and along side aluminum pieces that hold the carpet down, i ran a heavy gauge wire from the battery, split into two wires, one to yellow wire(always on) and another to a toggle controlling the lead to the cd player(red-ignition switch controlled) which also has a wire going to the 50w(yeah 50 not 500, im poor!)amp, had the same setup last summer, only difference is the amp and two cheap subs in the trunk, also, a much bigger amp would prolly need more capacitors or something like that, i am not aiming for a thumping system, just quality, so the small amp should work good, i have picked up a few amps ranging from 40-80 w for about a buck a piece, plus shipping for the ones off of ebay, Dutch Dart is correct, blue is remote for amp or power antenna, if you have an orange wire, its for illumination, not sure what it does, i just always leave it alone and it works fine and lights up, so i am not real sure what its for, i think most cd players are the same, but f your cd player came with an book look in it to see what the colors are, if that doesnt work you can try online or contact your manufacturer, sorry for rambling, good luck!

sounds good, good luck with it, i wouldve rathergone the console way(was thinking wood and plexiglass) but not enough room, i also didnt wnat to cut up the back dash so i put boxes from walmart in the back window, they hold 6x9s i wasnt 100% sure if that was legal but i blew a fuse and got pulled over for lights and the only thing the cop mentioned about the car was "where did you find this?" good luck!

Custom Autosound has a line of radios that are designed to fit the old dashes w/o modification. They're on the web at
