The in-wheel motor/hub/brake assembles would probably be easiest to use in an EV conversion. There are no drive axles, but there are at least two paired motors. This technology isn't actually new, it has been around since 1994, but no major OEMs have used it until now. Its considered to be a better way to do all-wheel drive hybrids as its lighter and easier to service than using drive axles. The disadvantage is unsprung weight, which can cause a more bumpy ride. My Ram has a 48 volt motor that sits where the A/C compressor would normally be. It has a belt on it that runs to the bottom pulley. It restarts the motor as soon as you ease up on the brake pedal. It has a button on the dash to disable it, but I never use it.

What year Ram?

How do they achieve 48 volts? Is the whole truck 48 volts?

Does the button need to be pushed every time you start the truck, or can you push it once, forever?

And does the 48 volt motor always start the truck, or does it also have a normal starter?

If I am sitting at a long light or stopped in traffic, I always shut my engine off. My cars start very fast, so it is no big deal.

I also remember reading somewhere else that it still has a starter motor for cold starts.

I remember those 8-6-4 Cadillac, than GM went diesel... Both engines caused the "turd in the punch bowl effect" in showrooms for a year or two as I recall.

Charley, my 82 LeBaron will drain a battery in three weeks. It's been doing it since I took delivery in May 1982. I installed a battery shut-off switch on negative terminal.

I have cylinder deactivation on the 5.7 300C. One can feel and hear when it cycling 4 to 8 to 4 cylinders; well I can anyway. In 4 cylinder mode it makes a faint cavitation like sound. I suspect it is helpful in areas cursed with flat terrain, but here in hilly New England it probably doesn't improve fuel economy much if at all.

My '16 Ram also makes that sort of rumbling cavitation sound when it is in 4 cyl mode.

One things for sure....when I switch from 3.21 gears to 4.10, the deactivation feature comes on a lot less.

No, truck has a normal starter too. For the 48 volts, I am guessing they are charging a capacitor. The truck also has a 110V inverter on it for a charging plug in the console.

The button deactivates the shut off until the truck is shut off and restarted with the normal ignition.
