Just heads up - I had the following exchange today with Mann+Hummel (below) who owns Mann, Purolator, and Wix brand filters. I was looking for their best filter for my slant that had a standpipe - since I'm not using the one that attaches to the oil pump.

In short, Mann (Wix & Purolator) will not warranty any filter on our engines that have a standpipe - like the Wix #51806 or Purolator #L30137 that many of us use. If they don't warranty it on my engine, that's enough for me to not buy it.

So, I contacted Baldwin, and they recommend and warranty the BT216 filter, which have both a standpipe and an anti-drainback valve. I've been using their B2 filters for years, good stuff.

3. (final) REPLY: Not for that car we don’t. Baldwin BT216 crosses to 51806, it has a standpipe. We will not warranty it or stand behind its use on your Plymouth Barracuda
2. ME: Between Mann, Wix, and Purolator - you don't have a filter with a standpipe that fits the slant-6 engine (comprable to Baldwin BT216)?
1. (initial) REPLY: 1968 Plymouth Barracuda 3.7L 225 CID = WIX 51515. This filter does not have a stand pipe and is not offered that way. It does have an anti-drain back valve.

So... take from this dialogue what you will, but I'm ordering some Baldwin's.

Has any person on Earth in all of history ever made an oil filter warranty claim?

Yup - I owned an insurance adjusting company years ago and recall several mechanical failure claims where oil filters failed (seal blew or case split). It doesn't seem common but happens.

So, to me, the fact that a manufacturer will not warranty a product for a particular application, even when the part physically fits - is good enough for me to not buy it. But that's me... your experience may differ :)

Yep. Had a purolator filter fail from a rust spot on the "can". engine lost all it's oil. Customer Vehicle on a trip, about 500 miles after LOF. After a bunch of crap, Purolator did admit defective part, and paid for an engine. However I did not send them the filter to examine. I made them send a rep to my shop to verify both the filter and the engine.

Before a reputable company can offer a warranty on a part there is typically a requirement that the Engineering or Reliability group with in that company has completed what is commonly referred to as a DVPR. That is short for a Design Validation Plan and Report. The DVPR can be a physical test that in the example of an oil filter is an engine running with oil filtration samples over and extended time. Or it could be a desk top review where the features and specification of the product, an oil filter in this example are rigorously compared to the specific requirements and physical pressures, flow rates that a specific engine, a slant six motor in this example.
Most likely what you have ran into with a company refusing to warranty a product that you know physically fits is that they do not have an internal Engineering or Reliability dept release on file that permits them to catalogue that product as being suitable for that specific engine.
There are lots of reasons for this, perhaps that company chooses to not do any DV work for engines that have been out of production for 30 years. Maybe they never released a filter for a slant six motor so they have no historical data. I do think that every slant ever produced had its own stand pipe, I doubt if they have completed an Engineering comparison of their stand pipe and anti drain back valve to the slant six stand pipe and anti drain back valve.
Honestly, I look at it that they have a high level of credibility to say to you, ‘ just because it fits we cannot warranty it’s suitably for use’.
Personally I feel that if that filter functions fine on a John Deere tractor or what ever it is cataloged for it will function fine on a slant six. But I have no Engineering or Reliability data to support that. And I guarantee you that with only feelings to support functionality, if something bad did happen and it went to court, I would lose my ass.
Personally I believe the reason some much automotive junk comes out of china and india is because all they do is verify that the part will fit. There is no in depth review to verify that the part will continue to function over time in the environment that it is used in.

Fair points on all sides. I'm not criticising anyone's decisions on this—they might or might not be the ones I'd make; everyone has to decide for themself what they're comfortable doing, and there's no right or wrong answer here. I do think it shows just how rational and consistent we humans aren't that we're perfectly happy to drive an objectively unsafe car, that's nowhere near roadworthy by today's standards…but too risk-averse to use a heavy-duty filter because the maker won't warrant it in an off-label application.

We also see rabbits in clouds, a face in the moon, Jesus in our grilled-cheese sandwiches from time to time, and luck in our favourite numbers. None of it's really there, but…MonkeyOS 1.1b3 is a very quirky operating system!

slantsixdan You say "Fair points on all sides. I'm not criticising anyone's decisions on this...", but your rhetoric says otherwise. Would you by chance have something constructive to add?

Wix #51806 Ran it on my race car at 6000-6400 rpm with standard oil pump. Run it on my current race car with the external pump and remote filter. I'll continue to run it probably. Looking at the factory standpipe and the restriction it appears to have, I will take my chances with the premium filters with them built in. My guess is they haven't done the "testing" like some others have said.

190+k mile 225 engine, since stock-type rebuild in 1989. High 12s on pump premium and 14 psi boost. Still gets 23-24 MPG hwy. No standpipe ever or fancy/expensive oil filters. Not treated kindly when driving or racing, but changed oil regularly every 2000-6000 miles since rebuilt. Showing some wear certainly, but perfectly serviceable. Just my 2 cents.

I use STP S-16 filters on my junk because I have a bunch left from my Dakota and Ram trucks. Both of them had over 200K on them when I sold them, good enough for me.

I run that Baldwin filter on the race cars and Never had any problem. Street car usually a wix 51515 because I use the oil pump stand pipe.
