I bought a 64 Dart with a slant 6 about a year and a half ago. I drove it home to California from Arizona. There have only been 2 previous owners and it seems like they took fairly good care of it. The years have been pretty good to it. I drive it every day, but she's definitely getting a bit tired of late. The tubes around the spark plugs aren't sealed and I'm getting all kinds of oil blow by through the PCV system and into the air filter - not to mention the dark exhaust. I'd like to get the engine overhauled asap, and I was hoping someone could give me a ball-park figure of the going rate for a complete overhaul.

How much of the work are you going to do yourself?


If you buy a kit, get a good machine shop, and do the assembly and installation yourself...you can ball park $1200 +/-.... assembled long block from Kragen/Schucks/Autozone $1200....if the machine shop has to do the work... (depends on how many 'options' you add to the list...)

I have the will, but not the way. Unfortunately I have no driveway much less a garage to work in. Within the first couple months after I brought her home, I replaced the fuel pump and the distributor on the street. But there's no way to undertake a bigger project roadside - at least not in LA. So, I know I'm going to have to have a shop do it all. And I figure if I'm taking it in to get it overhauled, I should do it right. I want to have everything checked while they've got it apart.

I read a listing for a Dart friendly shop in Burbank on the Dart site. I'm going to give them a call this week. I was just hoping to head into the whole thing well informed. I don't mind paying for quality work, but I don't want to be taken for a ride either.
