Did clean up some old greasy rods from a 225" and discovered that the #1 differs from the others in its lower end, have anyone any good idea why?

It sounds like the engine may have been "patched together" sometime in the past to repair a spun rod bearing.

If you get an engine that has a bad rod knock, shops / mechanics will need to swap-out the crank and bad connecting rod because they are too damaged to recondition. This is not a problem as long as the replacement con rod is the same weight as the others.

I have torn down motors that have never been apart that had two slightly different style rods installed with the same part number, but different markings. I have not encountered this with a slant six, but there is a possibility that, as in the ones I've seen, the factory was probably in the midst of changing vendors (my theory) and the assembler just installed the first 8 rods he happened to pull from the bin. :?

I would be more inclined to believe that a single oddball rod would be more suspect as a repair as DD has stated.

Were these rods, all from the same engine? If they were just in a pile, one of them could be from from a cast crank, while the others are from a forged crank. Or the other way around.

From the very same engine, and no.1 is the one least subjected to what gruesome things ever can happen inside an engine, the flange towards front has non-concvae surfaces at bottom, between the bolthead and mating point, the "back" side looks like all the rest... :?
