I seem to recall a post talking about using an older style head (big plug, drool tube) on a newer 77-79 block. I am not finding it in my searching. They question is whether the pushrod, lifters, adjusters rockers etc will all swap over. Is there any difference in the head gasket I should use. What is the best head gasket.

That swap will be fine.

Any head gasket will work for a stock engine build. Fel Pro is what I would use.

Just as long as you are not trying to swap a Hydraulic Lifter Head on there with out swapping the cam and other appropriate parts with it.
