i was reading a book i bought for my dad, "Super Stock, Drag Racing the Family Sedan," and read a caption about a cop named Ron Root that raced in the 60's. He had a 64 dart with a 225 that ran mid 14's. The caption says he had a Carter AFB mounted on an Offy intake with and Isky cam and lifters and a transistorized ignition. in the pic you can see that he didnt even run headers and had the factory exhaust manifold. What other tricks did this guy have up his sleeve to run that fast naturally aspirated and without nitrous back in the day?

I would surmise that since that was in 'the day', when you could roll up to a gas pump and get 100 Octane leaded 'Ethyl', that he might have bumped the compression up quite a bit for starters....

-D.Idiot

Couldn't even fathom that nowadays with 100 octane at the local suppliers at $8/gallon 55 gallon drum minimum...

Just as a guess, I would say that it had some good headwork done, compression bumped up as high as he could go, lots of cam, manual transmission, 4.10 gear, and as much weight out of the car as possible.

My '66 went 14:20's last year with an automatic and 3.91 gears. I have Clifford headers though. Drove it to the track and back too. (75 miles each way)

I've recently purchased a 1966 Valiant V-100, 225 automatic. It is being prepped for SCCA Solo 2, probably ESP class (E Street Prepared). Maybe Street Mod. Time will tell.

Back in my drag racing days (around the 1966-1970 era) locally at Beeline Dragway near the Phoenix AZ area there was a small group of us racing our Mopar Slant Sixes. A 1962 Valiant wagon/225 driven by a Dale Crouse, "The Hustler" (a 1962 Lancer 225/auto that sometimes broke into the high 13's), and myself. I had a 1962 Valiant with 170, 2bbl., 3.91 non-posi rear, and Chrysler 4 speed. No headers. It had a 264'/.480" Crower reground cam, and .060" off the head.

My best consistent times back then (on recapped drag slicks) were around 14.60's (best of 14.4x) and about 94mph.

Side note - I had purchased the last available (I was told) factory hyper-pak manifold new from a dealer. I had tried it with a four barrel, but my "fabricated" homemade two barrel setup (the two barrel was from a 361 engine) was faster given my equipment at that time. I probably over-carbureted the H/P.......it had an AFB with 1 9/16 primaries, and 1 11/16 secondaries.

I am looking forward to trying my luck with the SCCA Solo 2 events. I'm already being teased relentlessly for even thinking about doing this. Sure I likely will lose to the top V-8's that dominate that class (SCCA seems not to recognize 6 cyl's), but I'll bet I beat quite a few before I'm done.

I'll report back once underway. Lots to do before the first adventure......
