Hello Doug!
I read the article and since I also have a '64 I decided to do it. Maybe someone else can help me with this, but how do you get the 2 top bolts of the oil pump out? They're covered by a shield. :x
I guess you've got to pull the motor mount but I thought I'd ask first.
Thanks to anyone who can help. :)

Those two bolts are not covered by the shield, they actually fasten the shield to the oil pump. There are 6 attaching bolts on older oil pumps, and 5 on newer pumps. The lower left bolt is absent on newer oil pumps.

I don't know who rebuilt this motor, but my shield is facing the other way.
I guess it should be up, like yours?

OK check that. Mine is facing the same way. I guess your motor in the pic is out of the car? Mine is in the car.
I am looking down at the shield, which is held in by the top two bolts (that are underneath the shield).
Any thoughts? :?

Yep, that picture was taken minutes ago of engine on stand in garage.
I'm not familiar with the early A-bodies, can you reach the bolts by crawling under the car???

By the time you unbolt the motor mounts and everything you have to do to get the cam and pump physically out of the block, it is easier to just pull the motor.

Getting to the pump bolts is the easy parts. You have to have the motor raised about 6" to get the pump drive clear of the block itself. :(

I have always just jacked the motor up about 2" and dropped the pump back away from the cam, but not removed it. I do pull the pass side motor mount bracket off the engine. When I put the pump back in, I just put some permatex ultra blue (or similar) on the mating surfaces and plug it back in. Never had a leak there.

I've done the in-car cam swap at least 8 times in my '64 and '68 Darts. I think it's easier than pulling the motor, although I can see the benefits pulling the motor too (no front end dissassembly). Certainly if you're pulling the trans out anyway, then it's easier to pull the motor out for the cam swap.

Thanks for the tip.
Do I have to worry about the pick up tube coming off? If it does, do I need to pull the pan to get it back on?
I know it seems like I should just pull the motor, but I don't have a chain lift or anything. I'm guessing the motor weighs about 350lbs right now? (no head on it)
Anyone ever lift one out? I think it's not possible.

Don't worry about the pick-up tube, it screws into the engine block and will not be effected by what you are doing.

One way to get a "short block" out of the car with-out a lift is to loop a chain over the engine and then stick a long 4 x 4 post or pole thru the loop. Now get 4 strong people (2 per side) to lift from each side of the car.

The "hot tip" if you use this method, get the car as low as possible, like take the front wheels off and drop the car down onto some wood blocks.

Or, you can rent an engine hoist from U-haul or another rental place for like $40-50 a day.

Thanks again! I am trying to get the motor and tranny done at the same time. If I rent a engine hoist, is it feasable to put back the engine with the tranny connected? I've done this on other cars, but my '64 has a tight fit.

I've done it both ways and I tend to do motor first, then tranny, but everyone seems to be different on this. Since both are coming out, it might be easier to do it as a unit. Gotta get the angle up on this baby and get the car off the ground a little. Might have to take hood off too - can't remember.

BTW, if I were going to pull the tranny, AND want to do a cam swap, I would just pull them both out.

At $50 a day to rent, you'll need it for two days at least, to take the engine out and put it back in, you may as well buy a hoist. They are about $150 or so.
