Always ran Dex/Merc III, just read up on switching to Dexron VI in my quest to figure out where my ATF leaks are coming from.

Besides pulling the trans pan and replacing the filter and draining the torque converter of fluid, do I need to drain the old Dex/Merc III fluid from anywhere else in the system? Is there any significant amount of old fluid left in the cooler?

Just so we're clear: Dex-VI is a considerably better fluid than Dex-III, but won't stop your leaks.
No and no. These fluids are miscible and intercompatible.
