Hi Slant 6ers,

I am looking for one (or maybe two) points distributor(s) for a Slant 6. Shaft should be complete and spin freely and be straight. I do not care about the points plate, points/condenser, or vac can (can be bad or missing).

Thanks,
Lou

I think I have some. I'll take a look later.

How 'bout a brand-new one? It's an interesting one, too, for the obvious reason.

2642 796 checks out as a '67 (only) part; it's the service part number to replace OE distributor 2642 795, which is for all '67 225/Auto cars with CAP (clean-air package). That means this distributor's advance curves are meant for use with the vacuum advance control valve, which I wrote about awhile ago here (scroll down and you'll see a plot of the standard vs. CAP advance curves; more info in the relevant Chrysler MTSC booklet here).

The cast iron body almost looks like this is a Prestolite IBR-4203G distributor as used on '64-'66 Canadian-built Slant-6s, but those have short cap-clips attached to the body with a screwed-on bracket, while this one has long cap-clips. That aluminum ID tag also has only a Chrysler number; Prestolite distributors had "PRESTOLITE" or "AUTO-LITE" and the PL/AL part number along with the Chrysler number. This isn't the first iron-body Chrysler Slant-6 distributor I've seen go by on eBay — don't think I've ever seen one earlier than '67 or later than '69, though there might've been a '70.

I have no idea why they would tool and produce a cast-iron distributor body they obviously didn't actually change over to or keep using. My only guess is it was some kind of emergency stopgap due to ???problem or strike at aluminum foundry???.

The vacuum advance unit looks like a Prestolite item — built very differently to the Chrysler type. This one you can unscrew the hex end and access the diaphragm spring (like in case if you might want to shim it or substitute a weaker spring or limit the travel or…). The FPC calls for a vacuum advance № 2098 664, and when I go searching I find NOS-in-Chrysler-box examples with the Prestolite design and with the Chrysler design, both under that same number. I never tried mix-matching vacuum advances between factory Prestolite and Chrysler distributors, so I don't know if they will swap. But now I'm amending my guess a little: some kind of problem at the Chrysler plant where they built the regular aluminum distributors, so they bought some from Prestolite, built to Chrysler specs. Pretty good odds PL would've had at least partial tooling usable or readily adaptable to make these.

Anyhow, According to the FPC, it takes the standard Chrysler cap (like the Prestolite Canadian distributor does) and the standard Chrysler rotor (which the Prestolite Canadian dizzy doesn't). So, a regular \6 Pertronix kit or Dyna-Flyte dual-point plate should fit just fine, if that's the way you roll.

Thanks, Charlie and Dan.

Interesting "hybrid" distributor there, Dan. I guess it is new old stock... Might order one.

Charlie, interested in 1-2 of those if in decent shape.

Cheers!
Lou
