Okay folks, its been awhile, actually years since I've done this.

So what is the proper procedure for removing the torque converter, so I can get ready to pull the slant six?

Specifically, how do I keep it from turning while I'm wrenching on the torque converter bolts?

Thanks in advance!!!

I usually just use a long wrench and a sharp rap to break the torque on the flexplate bolts
Then rotate around to the next one.
You could build a little bracket on the bellhousing using some angle to engage the starter teeth.
After all the bolts are out push the TC back in the transmission.
You can make a little bracket to keep the TC while you separate the trans from the engine.

I’m trying to figure out how to hold the tc while I remove the bolts.
I don’t have a shop or garage, just a storage space and some tools.

Just stick a flat blade screw driver into the gear teeth, and the shaft against the block or whatever is convieniant.

I have had good luck removing torque converter bolts by placing the wrench on the bolt at an acute angle to an asymtotic line to the torque converter edge. Stated another way, if the bolt I am trying to turn is at the bottom of the converter, and if you consider the bolt the center of a clock face, get the wrench pointing to 1-3 o'clock. This makes the force applied to the converter more linear (up) and less torsional (rotational). This means the force you apply is applied more to turn the bolt than to turn the whole converter. I am usually able to pop the bolts loose this way and then unthread them by hand.

Thanks for the tips guys!

One more question:

Are these bolts “reverse thread”, or no?

What I mean is, do they turn the same direction as any other bolt?

Thanks!

Normal rotation, = righty/tighty, lefty/loosey

Does this apply when upside down facing the wrong direction and the backside of the fastener?

And the baby steps continue...

Ok, I successfully removed all 4 torque converter bolts.
The first one was the toughest, until I figured out where to put the screwdriver.

However, 1 of those bolts fell into the area between the engine and trans.

Dang it!

So I just have to watch out for it when I pull the engine.

So, next is the engine to trans bolts, is that right?

Thanks for the help, the saga continues!
