I thought I would post a couple of pics of my second slant drag car. I am still working on the 65 Belvedere, but there is a lot left to finish before it is ready for the track. With this in mind, I knew I would not be able to have the Belvedere ready to race this year. I am dying to go racing so when I ran across a terrific deal on a sweet 71 Plymouth Scamp, I just had to jump on it.
I am the third owner of this beauty. The first owner kept it mostly in a garage, but the second owner didn't have that luxury. The second owner was spectating one at the slant six races at Mason-Dixon and was so impressed that he decided he wanted to build a turbo slant for himself. When he got this car, he made a few major upgrades (rear springs, disk brakes) but eventually realized he had too many other projects, so this one had to go.
The body is in amazing shape, very little rust and never been wrecked. It is solid, top to bottom; however, it will need a couple of patches in the front floor, but nothing huge. The guy I got the car from even gave me full patch panels for the driver and passenger side front. He also converted it to manual front disk brakes (from manual drums) and installed new leaf springs in the rear. This car was lightly optioned, only having power steering, manual drum brakes (originally) an AM radio and basic bench seat interior.
Currently, the car runs and drives great. I converted to manual steering (20:1 box) and added Mopar electronic ignition (using real Mopar NOS parts). I rebuilt the one-barrel carb so that it starts and idles better. It currently has 14 in (big bolt pattern) Mopar Ralley wheels with adapters on the rear axle. It has a 7 1/4 rear with 2.7 gears, open rear. That has to go. I am hoping to find an A-body 8 1/4 rear for it but in the interim, I have a 65 B body axle I can squeeze in there. It is about the same width as the current axle w/adapters.
The plan is to have a stronger rear with either 3.55 OR 3.91 Sure-Grip installed in time for Mason-Dixon. I also have a Super Six setup to swap in as well.
So, there you have it, I have a plan B to get back into drag racing and I am very excited to finally hit the track this year.

I hope to have a 4 bbl, shaved head, bigger cam for that race.
For now, I have some minor changes planned. For one thing, it has a HUGE aluminum 4 row radiator. I am going to put something smaller in its place. I am looking for a pair of the Mopar twin scoops for the hood and possibly a fiberglass pin on hood if I can find one. I have a pair of black bucket seats from a Neon that I may put in there, but I am looking for something nicer. cosmetically, I could use a driver side blue sun visor and the inside A pillar trim on the driver side as well. The glove box is missing something that goes around the knob, but I have no idea what it looks like. Find nicer rear seat (or recover the current one). New package tray and replace the headliner (has one small hole chewed into it (but hidden by a sun visor).
The cosmetic stuff is not my main focus. Instead, I will be making small upgrades for racing. I will be ready for Mason-Dixon in May even if I have to race it as-is.
I am really stoked to get back racing.
