Here is the final update of the transmission issues I was having with the 4 speed install. 1st part is in this link.https://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=68620

After the last post in that link I went ahead and pulled the transmission back out and got the second identical 833 OD from Ryan. Before I installed it I removed the side cover and checked the shift interlock levers and looked for anything amiss inside this 2nd transmission. I saw nothing and the truth is that both of these transmission were run and were fine in Ryan's Dart. So I went ahead with the install, which is really no fun. But I had high hopes we would be good to go. Unfortunately this tranny acted exactly the same as the first one! N0, I'm not kidding. So after doing everything right that I know how to do on this install, and still having issues, I made the executive decision to swap the automatic back in. Yeah I know! I don't give up easily, but I think I have just run out of steam as far as fighting this any more. At 65 years old I am just too old to be this frustrated with something that is supposed to fun to do. So this past Thursday night and all day Friday I reinstalled a nice automatic and 4000 stall speed convertor. I had to reinstall the oil cooler and the automatic shifter assembly too. Fired it up and ran it down the road just like it was never removed! At least now I can go race with it.

As I contemplate what could be going on, I would have to guess something in the hydraulic clutch set up but I don't know what. No grinding when shifting. Going from 1st to reverse rather quickly without grinding says the clutch is releasing properly.(At least that is what Brewers says) So since I can't make sense of it, I will be driving an automatic for the foreseeable future.

The truth of the matter is I wanted the 4 speed for the OD, but I think I will likely just let the 4.30 gears in for racing and then swap in some 3.55 to run it on the road. Or maybe even a new set of 3.73's would be a decent compromise. I have a bad knee that will need replaced some day so I may not be able to push in the clutch anyway. Yes, I am trying to talk myself into being happy. But after several months of work, with many many changes and upgrades, I never figured I'd be back to an automatic.

Last thing I can think of is that the Hydraulic cylinder is extending too far pushing the fingers into the springs of the clutch disc. Maybe a clutch pedal stop in the floor is needed (experiment by shifting by pushing clutch less)?

Good deal on automatic for now.

It was either an automatic or set the garage on fire. I debated for a while .... :D :D

Rick,

Man, that sucks. I have been there and sometimes you do want to set everything on fire. But, eventually (usually) we regain our patience and figure things out. Otherwise, just make the car work again and enjoy driving that suckah!

The one other thought I have is maybe the pilot bearing/bushing is binding on the input shaft? I guess you dial indicated the BH, so it *shouldn't* be an alignment/angular issue?

Hope to see you at M-D in a week!

Lou

Hm. If you really want to clutch dump a Slant 6 car, you and I could trade cars on Sunday! I'll be bringing the 62 Valiant with slicks and everything...

Rick I forget, why didn't you use stock Z Bar stuff?

Early A body and long tube headers. The Z Bar does fit but I picked up the entire Mcleod hydraulic clutch system for cheap and figured that would free up a lot of room and lots of people have used that system without issue. Looking back, the Z Bar setup is probably what I should have used.
